Normal clutch slippage

My previous 2 cars (RX-8 and CRX) both had sport clutches. I have never daily driven a car with a stock clutch until I got my Prelude.

What I noticed is that when taking off in 1st gear, there is a period of time where the clutch slips and is not fully engaged. This results in a smoother but slower takeoff. I'm used to it just fully engaging without this in-between stuff and just taking off.

Another thing I noticed is that if I'm in a gear that is too high for the speed I'm at, it will start to slip. Then if I downshift to the next lower gear, it fully engages and stops slipping.

Is this behavior normal for a stock clutch, or is this clutch going out? And why does the clutch grab better when I shift to a lower gear?

Re: Normal clutch slippage

Your stock clutch shouldn't slip at all with stock power unless your clutch is going out or something else is wrong with it. How many miles are on the car? The OEM clutch in the 5th gen has been known to go over 200k before giving up the ghost (if it has been well taken care of).

Re: Normal clutch slippage

The car has 181k on it. So I guess it's about time to change the clutch.
