Icon5 Creaking sound when turning steering wheel

Last week I noticed creaking sounds when turning the steering wheel in my 99 Prelude SH.

What I found from a Google search was that it could be the lower ball joints.

So I stopped driving it for a few days, and when I drove it again a few days later, it wasn't making any creaking noises anymore.

And it's still not making those noises today.

Why was it making those sounds but it's not doing it anymore?

Re: Creaking sound when turning steering wheel

The colder it is usually the louder suspension noises become. Probably balljoints considering that is what the knuckle rotates on while you turn.

It could be worn out tie rod ends.

Re: Creaking sound when turning steering wheel

^^^ indeed. Sway bar links also tend to get really noisy as they age.

Re: Creaking sound when turning steering wheel

Use a stethoscope to pinpoint the noise. If it's the ball joint or tie rod and there is no play in it, poke a small hole in the boot and use a needle tip and throw some grease in it if there isn't a grease nipple. Links VERY rarely creak, almost always rattle rather than cease up. Other creaks while turning could be strut mounts, can spray those with silicone
Lubricants to try and make it go away.

Also the strut mounts can bind up causing a springy twang kind of noise when the spring actually moves to where it should be, usually just replace the mounts or quick strut ( the rest of the units shape depending.)

Also check to see is it outside the car, or inside? Sometimes, the plastic shell on the steering column will rub on the back of the wheel intermittently, and it sounds like creaking.
