Icon8 Exhaust rattle? or something worse

HI everybody new member her and just like to say great site and some of the best preludes ive seen. I've just bought a 5th GEN 1998 prelude that was fine when i bought it but it has developed a slight ratte only at 2,000 revs then stops as i press the throttle. It sounds like its coming from underneath or just behind me, rather than from the engine, is it my guess that its just a loose clip on the exhaust of could it be something worse. Any advice would be great.

David

check the hangers, and check any welds on the pipes, one of my brackets broke at the welds.. and then flew off as I went down the highway... so now I got a hole in my exhaust.. sounds extreme ricer

Hangers and heat sheilds. First thing in the morning, before you fire it get on your back and punch the exhaust pipe at different places under the car. That will enable you to find exactly where it is coming from.

My guess is the ceramic element in the cat is starting to break up. It's happening on mine right now.

Have your dealer check your VIN though........there may be a special policy that extends the federal 8yr/80K emissions warranty on the cat. You *might* be able to get a free replacement.

Yeah I too had some rattle under my car last week. I found my cold air intake was not properly bolted down, so I fixed that and then I found my heat shroud over the exhaust manifold had developed rust on the bottom bolt so much that the shroud had a hole big enough for the bolt and washer to pass right threw the hole in the shroud, so I removed the shroud, rattle gone.

I also notice that the heat shroud on the CAT rubs speed bumps (only the one at work) when I pass over it, my car is factory height and I have the stock wheels and tires on it. I think the speed bump at work might be a bit too high and I think I will let them know as it is damaging my car.

Hope you find your rattle, like the guys have already stated check your heat shrouds and tailpipe hangers make sure they are all in place and not broken.

just take off the heat shields on the header and cat completely. you'll avoid a whole lotta headaches later down the road too.
