Snow White (98 Base Project)

"A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away..." Kelly (Girlfriend) expressed an interest in getting a Prelude while we were car shopping for her. I managed to snag a 2000 base Automatic for a decent price, in my other thread (Here) you'll see that it had it's fair share of problems. While working on the car and subsequently driving it after... I really fell in love with it....

Now, a few years later, I've finally acquired my very own Prelude. I affectionately named it Snow White... as did quite a few people on here I've seen... so much for an original name!

So far I know the previous owner bought this from someone who said he had boosted it before. The car was in a mild accident and the airbags deployed. It apparently has TEIN springs. Beyond that I know it has a clean title!

The oil pump went out and did unknown damage. I drove to Columbus Georgia with my best friend and pocket mechanic Charlie to pick the car up. Had to take the front bumper off to get it on the tow dolly. Here's how she sits waiting for Lift time.

I'm going to take my time and do this right. I've done resto-mods on bikes before, and I've worked on cars all my life, however this car is the first Start - Finish project of this magnitude I've undertaken. Once I get an idea of the monetary investment I'll need to get the car up and running I'll be able to more accurately see how much money I can invest into mods. I am aiming for reliability, style, and comfort. Speed would of course be a bonus... but I won't look at that until I see if I'll be rebuilding this block or sourcing a replacement.

Here's what I have sketched out so far.

Phase One: Assess the damage to the motor and identify other areas of the car that will need to be repaired (Suspension, AC, PS are known issues so far). Then plan out the repairs accordingly. Starting with functional down to convenience.

Phase Two: Repairs / Mods / Upgrades. The Fun Part!

Phase Three: Cosmetics and I.C.E. (I have driven without a decent radio for far too long.)

I took Kel's Nikon and snagged some pics to see what I was working with...

There is damage to the hood, driver side fender, driver's door, small dent in the trunk lid, and the front bumper looks like at some point it fell off and got ran over. Not focusing on that right now though, just looking at mechanical. Can't get side tracked trying to make it look pretty before it runs.

The interior is in good shape with the exception that the airbags deployed. But the seats aren't ripped and it has the oem floor mats. I'll be pulling everything out to pressure wash the carpet, run my speaker wires and fix the dash after we pull the motor.

Stay Tuned... There's MUCH more to come!

Re: Snow White (98 Base Project)

Your radiator holders are swapped and need a clip - one of many random things I see.

Is the a/c line relocated or just disconnected? Hopefully it's not just hanging there... will need a good bit of work if so. Same for the p/s line hanging. A p/s pump and reservoir can be purchased pretty cheap, just hope it's looped at the rack and wasn't left open while driven by last owner.

Overall it's a great project car. It's unfortunate the previous owner boosted it, as the owner prior to him/her took very good care of the car. It shows in the engine bay where most would be rusted/worn.

Re: Snow White (98 Base Project)

I look forward to see-ing more of this project as it unfolds.
Being a fan of how comfy these hot rods were built to be I like the direction you say you wanna go.

Now in regards to your engine going again, if you find yours is ruined consider the H23 vtec engine. The blue top. You can get one used from an importer, take some stuff from your broken motor and make it function like stock. It is much less expensive going in than either rebuilding the 22 or importing one. It has lots of 'thump' the 22 doesn't have as you build up the rpm's, and you can spend the dough you saved on all new gaskets, timing stuff, hoses and such.
My son did one for about $1500 total...including stiffer mounts and a new clutch.

Wings has a great write up on the in and out stuff you'll need. And folks here will answer questions as you get stumped.

Re: Snow White (98 Base Project)

Wing - the AC lines are disconnected. It's missing a couple of the lines as well. (Return?) Charlie knows his AC's too he said it shouldn't be too bad, the condenser is there with the compressor although the Comp will likely need to be replaced.

I'm not sure if they looped the PS... We'll see when I get it on the lift.

The upper strut bushing is trashed on the passenger side, suspension will need to be inspected thoroughly.

BYKFIXER - I've been investigating engine options in my downtime and I've considered the Blue Top. I'll go reads Wings posts and keep searching away.

Any suggestions are very welcome!

The Wings list is over at Prelude Central.
If you cannot see it let us know and somebody will hook you up.

Noober just did one so his build thread may answer questions as well.

Re: Snow White (98 Base Project)

Called Nikko Imports. They have H23A Vtec's coming in all the time for $950. Includes Dizzy, Head (PDE), intake manifold, and alternator. As I see most parts are swappable off hte H22A4 I'll most likely go this route if the motor is going to require any large amount of work.

Re: Snow White (98 Base Project)

Here's the list...screenshot style.

On my 97 build thread, page 10 about half way down I show pix of the transmission brace Wings mentions.
I used (and ruined) a bench grinder to remove areas needing to be ground. It takes some work, but keeps the elements from getting onto your flywheel etc.

Later I used a chunk of broken hacksaw blade wrapped in duct tape, teeth against the ruined grinder disk to un-ruin it. It takes some work too, but in about 15 minutes the disc from pretty free of stuck on alluminum.

Re: Snow White (98 Base Project)

I forget the reason why, but despite the transmission brace needing some work to fit over the oil pan of the H23a vtec - it's better off than using the pan from the H22. May be how far down into the pan the pickup sits, one of many things i've forgotten over the years...

Re: Snow White (98 Base Project)

We used the lighter of the 2. The thin metal 2.3 pan. The alluminum 22 pan was noticably heavier.

Re: Snow White (98 Base Project)

Update:

Got the Drive Train pulled! Here's some pics!

Draining fluids...

I didn't have hands available to snap a pic while we were working the motor out but here she is after it got yanked.

Waiting to pick up 4 bolts from Lowes today so I can get the trans off and get the motor on the engine stand.

So, it has Tein STech's... Nice to find... with stock struts though...

...Then I cleaned up the Muffler while I had the car up to figure out what it was... to my complete amazement it's a HKS Super Dragger! I was considering going back to stock when I first saw it... but I mean... I guess I can leave a $600 Exhaust on for now... at least see how it sounds.

And.... The celebration for a "little" work done on Labor Day. Rocky Patel Maduro and an Ice Cold Corona.

Okay Guys... Stay tuned!

Bonus Pic

Re: Snow White (98 Base Project)

9/25 UPDATE

Okay so I finally decided to start tearing the motor down... turns out each time I'd go to the shop I'd end up just standing around drinking beer... heh

Found the cause of the engine failure...

OUCH!!

Now for those that don't know that is a spun journal bearing. I've been looking at motors as replacement, Nikko Imports here has H23A's (DOHC Vtec) for $950 (45k - 60k Miles).

But then I ran across a Member of the Prelude club here in GA that had an unfortunate accident early this year, during a nasty storm quite a few branches from a pine tree decided to belly flop on his 4th Gen.... So instead of spending money to fix the damage he gutted the car. He's got a H22A block with a balanced H23A Crank and Rods (with the H22A pistons), a nice little stroker, for a nice price. So I'll most likely be picking that up.

Stay Tuned...

Re: Snow White (98 Base Project)

Seriously considering getting a Red Top H22A so I can just drop it in...

If I go with the H23A Vtec I'll have to get a Hondata S300, H23 Basemap, and then take it to a shop to get it tuned before I can even drive it.

I'm quite possibly the most indecisive person I know... but I'm not sure.

Re: Snow White (98 Base Project)

I'm about to have some very big changes coming soon. Kelly (GF of 6 years) is getting a Job on a cruise-ship for 5 months so I'm going to rent a room from a buddy who happens to already be renting a room out to my mechanic. I'll be picking up 1/4 share in the shop and I'll be about 40 minutes closer as it's 1/6th a mile away from the house.

Re: Snow White (98 Base Project)

Wow didn't realize I haven't updated in a LONG time. After much debating we ended up parting out the prelude (I kept the trans and all swap components plus wheels and a few other bits.

This thread is toast.

I'll be making a new thread for the next project prelude I bought...

It's fast.

Re: Snow White (98 Base Project)

So it was going to cost me far too much money to fix the White Prelude. It actually turned out to be worth more to strip what parts I could and scrap the car.

I waited a few months and when my (now Ex) GF ended up letting a girl friend borrow the Red 2000 Automatic and apparently the transmission went into limp mode and allegedly she pulled over as soon as it happened however after taking the car to the shop and pulling out the spark plugs... well I have a funny video.

https://www.facebook.com/Joseph.Russ...type=2&theater

So my guess is she redlined it in 2nd or 1st to keep speed up and blew the motor.

So... I bought this 1997 Base with a H22A swap and a ton of mods in order to swap the drivetrain in the week before the Red Lude died.

Here's the good bits... ;)

H22a Type S motor/Euro R (With AEM Ajustable Cam Gears)
P72 / Hondata S300v2 (OBD1 to OBD2 Harness)
T2W4 LSD 5 Speed
Skunk2 70mm Alpha Series Throttle Body
Euro Type R intake w/ All the Rosko Racing Bits Port Matched to TB (EGR Delete etc)
MSD Blaster SS Coil
Hytech Replica Header

This will be going into the Red Lude.

Yes it does and it cools like a beast. The previous owner was going to boost the car and had to get a smaller radiator for the clearance.

I'll be using the stock one I have in the Red lude (it's only 2 years old) because I want to be able to cool my AC as well.
