Re: PSJB Build Journal

So everything is pretty much in place, just needs torqued down.
I have a few day off next week i'll be using to run rest of my hoses and get the wiring harness back in and that should be it!
Will have more pics soon.

Re: PSJB Build Journal

I have everything back in my car and am nearly done now, but i ran into a more serious problem.
I ended up blowing out the threads on my coil, but my question is:
Should I fix it w/ a few Helicoils or can I avoid ripping my head apart by switching to an internal coil?
From what I've seen an internal coil is just a fatter dizzy and the spot I blew out will just be empty right?
I also saw a few that were just relocated for aesthetics.

Re: PSJB Build Journal

Fixed the threads w/ a helicoil (wasnt so bad) and everything is in place ready to go (minus a few hoses and my intake).
I do have to drop my harness back in though because i wanted to re-tape stuff and had to move my IACV plug, but thats nothing.
I'll have fluids in shortly so i can get it started, at which point I will be kicking and giggling like a little girl.

Re: PSJB Build Journal

Nice progress.

Your coil is nearly where I fit mine. Everyone thinks i'm using an internal coil distributor lol.

May I suggest, flipping the distributor wires around to the backside and moving the wires for the wiper motor through the hole in the fender into the cowl. No cutting required, just need to carefully pop the cowl up to reach in and plug everything back in/ feed the abs wires back into the bay.

Re: PSJB Build Journal

so i tried to start my car a few times now, i wasnt getting any spark, so i bought a new dizzy and when i just went out and tried it... still didnt work.

*much grief*

I have gas (to my rail at least), I got a new battery (on the charger atm again, just cuz), I cleaned my injectors first, and i can imagine my grounds are bad (i doubled up just to be sure and tested), my firing order is fine, i have fresh gas, even tho it is regular (I am on 9:1 now)

This is my issue pretty much to a Tee... But no answer
http://honda-tech.com/tech-misc-15/9.../#post27765207

Has to be a bad ground, right?
My fuel pump resets so it must stop when i crank it... so i have no gas, plus my injectors cant fire = no start

Re: PSJB Build Journal

my main relay tested OK and i feel like if i move my grounds around my fuel pump doesnt reset after a failed crank start... (cant be sure)

im running out of ideas... anybody smarter than me got one?

id like to return my (hopefully) unneeded dizzy and coil.

According to the manual:

x Fuel Pressure
x PGM-FI main relay

- Ignition system
- Crankshaft position/Top dead center/Cylinder Position sensor circuit

x A/T gear position signal
x Contaminated fuel

I tested my injectors and im not getting 12v to them like i should.
Apparently there is a difference between OBD1 vs 2 when it comes to crank sensors? i have an OBD2 ecu and my motors supposed to be JDM (OBD1).

edit:
UGH!!! *much grief*

yea... so so i definitely over looked the crank gear

my new one doesnt have the "fins" so my crank sensor is pretty much useless i guess and so is my car at the moment...

1) So my options are to pull everything to install this gear for now
2) Do an OBD1 conversion (which id have to do anyways when i get a new ECU)

Re: PSJB Build Journal

You need a USDM oil pump which has a mounting location for a crank sensor. As well as the above mentioned crank gear AND balance shaft gear.

Or, you could just use an internal coil distributor with a conversion harness (also requires adding a wire or two) I forget exactly who I was talking to last year about doing this....

internal dizzy + ecu + harness = success?

Re: PSJB Build Journal

sooo happy (even tho i got fired monday), MY CAR STARTS!!!

ONLY problem is, i have an idle issue.

No FITV (see post #36) and i already disconnected and removed IACV to test (electrical connector and plugged the holes) and had flashed the stock h22 base map to the ECU (buddys Hondata s300)

I think Im going to remove the coolant lines to the IACV as well and double check for leaks and bubbles.
(Specifically step 9)
http://www.preludeonline.com/f91/how...-plate-118675/

Also being at 9:1 now i feel like my engine is knocking and thought i should be at a 1.4 AF ratio so IDK bout that either. (start at 1.2 and it drops as it runs)

P.S. BTW, i got an internal dizzy + Rywire OBD2a to OBD1 distributor harness + OBD2a to OBD1 ECU jumper + i stole my buddys S300 Hondata ECU to get that far ^^^

Re: PSJB Build Journal

i think i had air trapped in the lines. BUT, i removed the coolant lines from the IACV and looped the thermostat and it seems good. Idles high still but no leaks, no flutter or bouncing. I even took it out a few blocks. and the temps stayed fine.

My issue now is my tune. as i dont like the high idle rattling my car or the fact that my AF ratio is still trash...

1.2 cold and 0.8 warm, no bueno

instead of temps, now im worried about my engine knocking apart...

but, hey!

I can drive it now!

----

ok, so i did find this: http://www.preludepower.com/forums/s...d.php?t=211317

my idle is still high but doesnt bounce since its under 2k, but wen i start driving i get the bounce when I get out of gear and drop into in Neutral or come to a stop.
since my idle is already close to 2k already, when it goes up just a lil, it puts me at 2k and my bounce beings from the compensation...

X 1) im pretty sure i dont have any air bubbles now
X 2) I dont have a FITV or any codes (also removed the IACV and plugged the holes)
X 3) my PCV Valve is new - Idle Set Screw is closed but also didnt a difference - didnt check the TPS yet but not sure thats it yet
- 4) which leaves me with a vacuum leak.

---

So i smoked my lines and didnt find any leaks, funny part is i had a CEL and my idle was good just before that except i didnt have anything to pull the code at the time and it didnt come back, so...

Im officially all out of ideas.

---

I did clean out my IACV and it lowered it by another 1k so im not bouncing anymore because of that, but it still idles high (~1700).
So far my work around is to turn the A/C on which will dip it to ~1400 or more.

---

I know sooo little about tuning... Ok so 0.8 is too RICH then, and I'm getting too much gas... (that makes more sense then what I'm looking for)
If i change my Closed loop settings my idle is MUCH better however i then dip to 0.7 AF which is even worse...

Ill have to play with it and see how i can cut the gas mixture down...

...I know, I know, I need a tune, but i want to make sure its Ok before I take it and find out theres something not right then they cant even do it anyhow.

Re: PSJB Build Journal

Sounds interesting, I need to re-up on my lude knowledge its been a while for me I need to continue my build before I do something stupid and buy a new car.

Are u using new intake gaskets all around, did u use a burping funnel and massage everything real good? That cured my issue couple years ago. I ****ed mine before by removing and replacing too often and torquing bolts too tight, not saying u did that but it's something to look out for. The tuner will sort out most of your issues, and if u scored hondata for free, spend the extra little bit on the diagnosis... U got it mostly covered, but idle is the most bitch of all on obd1, good thing is it can only be a few things..
Sorry for stupid questions, lol, but is the throttle cable too tight?

Maybe a piece of gunk holding the throttle plate open just a cun7 hair...?

Re: PSJB Build Journal

so it turns out "Its all in the Tune"

I had an H22 map i pulled from Honda-Tech i think, and thats what ive been describing.
I flashed the prelude map from the SManager Hondata app and it evened my idle out alot and the timing didnt seem as short, but still just as rich.

So the only experience I have with tuning is my Power Commander for the VFR.
(Which, itself is just a fuel map)
So Im goin to use the prelude.skl map as a BASE and try to cut the fuel map down and try to get it somewhat comfortable so i can at least get my 1k mile break-in done and let my tuner dial it in later.

I'm learning...

Also Happy America Day, a day late, brothers

Re: PSJB Build Journal

So I still havent been able to cut my fuel down so i guess ill just have to wait for the tune,
but the cars running pretty solid atm.

I had my thermostat cover and starter shake lose, so after losing a half gal. of coolant and snugging up my starter, im not leaking any thing no CELs, no nothing.

I did throw 1 code for V-tec spool but that was just a check box in Hondata and it went away.

I know i need to go back over the motor to re torque everything but i just wasnt expecting those 2.

All in all its pretty rock solid which is what i wanted, and since i didnt do so yet, heres some pics of her out in the wild.
(before anybody else says it, i know ppl hate on my tail lights but i think they look pretty good on mine atm and also, idc cuz its my car and i like them and my car is def anything but cheap and ricer so... #DealWithIt)

Re: PSJB Build Journal

So i got to drive my car for a few weeks before my rad started leaking on me, so i just went out and got stock replacement from autozone for $90 because im not ready to start worrying about an after market rad yet.

I also had an SRS light and had to jump out my whole wheel (pretty much just the SRS reel), so heres a disclaimer... (because responsiblity)

Re: PSJB Build Journal

Cars still running great, except for the "meh" tune. So, i seriously need info on a good header and exhaust... These are the last things i need to upgrade before getting tuned and im technically done with the car for a while. I was looking at PLM header possibly but need advice on rest of the exhaust too.
I still have my PS+AC atm so thats a consideration, any input is appreciated.

Re: PSJB Build Journal

Got some more work done;

Replaced P/S line

Finally got tuned, couldnt figure out exhaust, so i didnt do it. (more on that)

In its current state;

My exhaust is too restrictive, once v-tec kicks in it wants to take off but cant and i end up w/ this slow ramp up. As far as this chassis is concerned, 1 or 2 things is going to happen...

1) We talked about trying to do a custom sidewinder header so i can keep A/C and P/S and turbo it (because a JRSC isnt going to happen)

2) I am going to run this setup as-is until i find a nice DC2 (most likely) shell to swap this motor into for a turbo setup as planned and dropping a stock Type-S motor into the Lude.

Type-S setup will give me more of a DD i wont stress over as much, while the turbo will keep me at a "keep up on it" seasonal. Both will prob be about the same work and money wise, just waiting to see how it goes from here.

Re: PSJB Build Journal

More parts;

Gear-X 4.64 FD

WaveTrac LSD

All in anticipation of of the Tranny rebuild.
My fuel pump also died so;

AEM 340LPH Fuel Pump

My climate selector also broke the same day as the fuel pump died (lucky me) so I'm about to commit to ripping the A/C out and looking at getting;

Sheepey Built - Honda/Acura H22/H2B Version 2 Bottom Mount Turbo Manifold

because I'm kind of attached to the P/S at this point...

Need carbon synchros from Synchrotech and get to the tranny done before i start on too many turbo parts tho.

Im getting there... I dont daily it anymore since I'm heavy in the Motorcycle life now and when I dont ride its either flooding rain or snow, so I REALLY want to start doing some Track days with it once I get the tranny done and some respectable rubber on it.
