well, i called motor warehouse yesterday... and i was under the impression that my 97 prelude had an h22a4... but according to motor warehouse, their books list it as an h22a1? is that possible, and how would i find out the difference?

All USDM 5th gens came from the factory with an H22A4. It is possible to have a H22A1 swapped in but highly unlikely.

true true. if someone was smart the only other h22 that would be swapped into a 5th gen should be the jdm h22a.

well, its the stock motor... and my engine stamp says h22a4.. which is what i thought i had...

well, that means apparently motor warehouse has something screwed up in their books...

they were saying that the main journals were different sizes at that they used the h22a1 until 1998.

They're wrong. H22A4 started in 97. They're open deck and the H22A1 was close decked.

Yeah check the stamp. Open your hood and look straight down at the area where the block and the bell housing meet. It's real easy to see. I also have a 97 I'll check it after I get off from work and see.

they still said there is a difference in the main bearings from a 97 and the 98+s... so, im thinking their books are screwed up because i doubt the mains would be different on the a4s.

Well I checked the other day (my engine stamp) I have the 1997 Honda Prelude S, and I have the H22A4. Was the engine an option A4 or A1? Now I'm curious.

As long as I have known, I have heard of stock 1997 Prelude's having the H22a1.
I have also seen it on various websites relating chassis-motor stamp code.

I guess some have a1 and some have a4

that might explain why at only 97k miles, i will have to to be rebuilding my motor... someone probably swapped this tired out motor in there.

I'm guessing someone swapped out the original motor in my car... and put this a4 in instead... well, that explains why its burning so much oil at only 97k miles... oh well, i got it for cheap enough that i can rebuild the motor and still have gotten a decent deal on it.. plus it will be a brand new motor that will last myself forever!

4th gen Si Vtec Preludes came with h22a1...now, perhaps 97 models carried over the h22a1? something i highly doubt though.

99+ h22a4's have different cams from what i know...a little more power from what i've read.

it doesn't really matter until you start getting into high hp situations, a closed deck is stronger because there is no space between the cylinder walls and the block as there is in open deck motors. some companies make block gaurds for open deck blocks which fill the gap between the cylinder walls and the block.
