Icon7 Uncommon H23a blue top swap questions.

So my stock engine in my 01 has developed a wrist pin tap as well as a faint rod knock and I've come to the conclusion that a swap is in order to preserve the drivability of the lude. That being said I've also decided after much consideration that a h23a blue top is the logical replacement motor. I've done a good bit of reading and am aware of most of the modifications needed to put the motor in the car and have it run properly. The question I have is this. Has anyone done a h23a swap into a auto 5th gen? Is there anything I should be aware of when doing this? I haven't been able to find much info on it since most everyone it seems does this with a manual car. Any advice, hints, tips, or tricks would be greatly appreciated. If anyone knows of a good check list of things someone has already typed up a link to it would be great incase I might of missed something in my prep for this glorious undertaking!

Thanks guys and stay ludin'

Re: Uncommon H23a blue top swap questions.

I made a thread about this and it got locked because it's such a 'common question' but like you said there isn't much info about it.

I'd say take this opportunity and make your Lude a standard :P

Re: Uncommon H23a blue top swap questions.

The first question you should be asking: Where the hell am I gonna get an H23 Blue Top?

From my understanding, true blue top H23A's were manufactured exclusively for Japan, and only came on the JDM Honda Accord Si-R Wagon.

If your engine is going out on you, consider finding yourself another H22. It's really your best bet, unless you know how to make the necessary modifications to an H23 block to fit a VTEC solenoid, and then use an H22 head. I think that's the build M0B5TA has in his 4th gen, but i'm not sure.

Best of luck to you

H23a vtec aren't really that hard to get. Almost everyone here Florida is getting them when they swap.

Hhmmm, alright then. Everything i've read calls them rare for some reason. Do you happen to know if they're franken-engines or are they genuine?

Re: Uncommon H23a blue top swap questions.

My prelude came with a supposedly Jdm h23a vtec blue top, I bought it from a mechanic that did the swap on it. Been driving it for over 2 years. How can I tell if the engine is genuine and not a Frankenstein?

Interesting. When i was reading the wikipedia article for the H series engine, it essentially described the H23 Blue top as an H23/H22 frankenstein. "It has been factory modified with an internal oil passage in the H23A block to operate the VTEC solenoid in the H22A head".

I dunno where it's getting its information then, if Blue Tops are really that common.

Re: Uncommon H23a blue top swap questions.

The blue top came from cars with an auto tranny.

I'd say research the H23 itself to discover which car had what motor.

My son's came with an auto setup that we had to remove before installing a set up for the clutch. It's late and nyquil just kicked in so terms n phrases are escaping me right now.

Anyway you do the same swap of gizmos like the dizzy, sensors, intake etc. But clamp your auto tragic to it instead of a 5 speed.

Re: Uncommon H23a blue top swap questions.

I'm trying damn hard to give a nice response to this... because you didn't read enough.

Short answer: Yes, you can use this motor on an automatic 5th gen.

List of swap information? Yes, i've only left out I think 2 small items from the list..
H23Vtec parts/tools list

Re: Uncommon H23a blue top swap questions.

ya pretty much do like you would a 5 speed...only you clamp on the auto tragic to the block instead of the manual tranny.

The H23 came from auto cars in many cases. Research which cars had which H23 to know for sure.

Oh crap! I just woke up n realized I had already posted here...

Doh!
