Community input on 97 Lude build

Hola, como estas, beeches? Me llamo James Edward...whitest name in the world right? Now that intros are done...lets get to it

Situation: I found a 97 Lude in good shape with 94k original miles, K22, manual, and a BUNCH of new parts (axles, starter, alternator, timing belts, p13 jdm obd1 conversion with Mugen chip, new wheels/tires, new paint, cat back, and I'm sure I've left something out) for 4k (which includes 2 pioneer subs with boxes).

Mission: This sounds almost too good to be true...nothing LOOKED shady but I don't know Hondas like I know Chevrolets and I don't know this dude from Adam. So, what are some key indicators to look for that would suggest something is wrong with the car? BTW, title is clean according to the owner. Haven't run a Car Fox on it just yet.

Also, I have an aversion to stock vehicles. I had a Chevy van with a 4.3 v6 in high school (don't judge...not my idea) that had a cam, exhaust, and breather...it was the most badass van ever. That said, I plan on getting into this car deep if I end up buying it so I have a few questions. Some have been posted elsewhere but elsewhere always turns into a "who's cock is bigger" contest rather than a reasonable discussion. So lets keep it civil and keep the passive aggressive comments do a minimum...por favor

Preface) I want to build a daily driver that is a screamer and stay NA for now. I'd like to sacrifice as little fuel economy as possible in doing so but hey...if sacrifices must be made for the good of my adrenaline fix, so be it.

1) Cams. I am looking at the skunk2 pro or tuner series cams (just like every other need for speed wanna be out there). Now, the name of each series is suggestive of their intended use but I have read of people who swear by pros...period and those who think tuners are mo betta. The question is how exactly do the cams differ in performance STYLE? EG which would you feel only above VTEC, which would you feel on the bottom end and still get a big kick at VTEC engagement, does one give better economy than the other, vacuum issues, tuning the cams, any-and-all knowledge on these two lines of cams? Also, I realize that I will have to upgrade the valve train before I drop anything bigger than tuner stage one cams in.

2) Bottom end. At this point I see no reason to fiddle with the bottom end but feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. This is a discussion after all

3) Header. I put long tube headers on my pickup (bet you can't guess which brand ) along with a full dual exhaust and a huge drum breather and it made a big difference in power. The headers I used were 4-1 (one on each side) but I read alot about people using tri-y headers on these Hondas and loving them. Now, I personally like the look of the 4-1s but how often do you look under the hood and go "yeah...that header is sexy yo?" So that said, would the 4-1 sacrifice much in terms of economy or well rounded performance to the 4-2-1?

4) Computer. Now this is where I get really out of my league really quick. As I said, the car has an obd1 conversion with a Mugen chip. Throw the bull**** flag if something about that sounds wrong. Like I said, I get over my head with computers. Its a miracle that I am sitting here typing this to be honest. Anywho...the AEM Series 2 Plug & Play Engine Management System seems to be tops. It better be for the price. Would this make a good addition to the car vs the current setup? I know a guy, a trustworthy one, who can help me program it if so. But would it be worth the expense and hassle to do it? Also, can the current setup be tuned, if so how?

5) Other crap. To build a real screamer I realize that there are parts that I haven't mentioned that must be upgraded as well such as intake manifold, fuel rail, injectors, fuel pump, throttle body, clutch, so on, so forth, etc. I can handle most of that. I'm no stranger to turning wrenches, just not an expert especially not on Japanese cars.

That's about it for now. Thanks in advance for any and all help...unless it's bad help...in which case I will cut you Hope to hear from you guys. If you're ever in Conway, AR hit me up and I'll buy you a round at JJ's

Re: Community input on 97 Lude build

That was my take on it as well. I have been asking around and the consensus is that a new, even a used stock, ecu would be a good starting point. Any suggestions for an aftermarket ecu? I've been reading alot about hondata but would that be an option here? Or the AEM series 2? Thanks.

Re: Community input on 97 Lude build

See if you can find one a lot less "fixed up" already and do your own build.
That one sounds like the op can't keep it running or has issue after issue and wants to pass it off to some sap...in this case an admitted chevy guy who doesn't know Honda stuff.
Sounds like you'd be getting somebody else's hassles.
