Alright guys, I got an Update...

My Lude: 2001 Type-SH
Alright so I finally got a chance to take my lude to my mechanic, his son also has a prelude so i'm pretty sure he has some 5th gen prelude experience on his belt.

Anyway heres what's up:
*My driver axle is worn
*I have an oil leak
*She threw 5 codes:
P0301-cylinder 1 misfire
P0304-cylinder 4 misfire
P0420-Bad Cat
P0401-EGR
I didn't get the last one
*Front suspension is not in great shape but I'm guess its something I can live with for a little longer.

He are the things that needs replacement:
Distributor
VTEC Solonoid
Axles
Valve Cover Gaskets

This is what I'm thinking:
Get NGK Spark Plugs and wires while we're at it.
My mechanic recommended KYB shock/strut/spring combo.
He said he doesn't do aftermarket. So No coilovers (I'm good with that)
Fix the things that my mechanic said ASAP. And address the suspension & ATTS later.
***The timing belt and water-pump have been replaced before***

The estimate he gave for replacing:
*Distributor
*VTEC Solonoid
*Driver Axle
*Valve Cover Gasket
Is $800 including Labor.

Your thoughts? Anything else I'm missing?

Re: Alright guys, I got an Update...

Is the whole drivers axle toast or is it just one of the CV's? If the drivers side is bad then the passenger is probably not too far behind.

Assuming that all the misfire CELs get cleared with the new distributor, replace that cat and clean out that EGR. There is no point doing aftermarket mods to a car that doesn't run right to begin with. Wires/plugs/dizzy pretty well covers the ignition side, NGK is all you need. Also consider replacing your fuel and air filters to get her breathing properly. It goes without saying (but I'll say it anyway) that EVERY fluid in the thing should be changed ASAP if you're not sure of the service history. New springs and shocks would be next on my list to get it handling right again, the KYB combo is not a bad one.

A lot of mechanics won't touch coilovers since technically they're illegal for street use, it's a good sign that they at least have some moral fibre.

Yes, VTEC solenoid is two parts and each has a gasket and strainer. The gaskets are pretty easy to replace but generally they just harden over time causing the solenoid to leak. If your VTEC solenoid is not working at all then the electric solenoid part may need replacing also, but the other part is really just an oil gallery and sliding piston so not much can go wrong there.

As for other upgrades, what are you trying to get out of the car? Looks? Handling? Horsepower? A thumping sound system? Once the maintenance is out of the way then you're free to do whatever you wish.

Re: Alright guys, I got an Update...

he doesn't do aftermarket suspension but recommends an aftermarket suspension setup... lol find a new mechanic

axle is like 80 dollars
valve cover gasket is easy just buy the gasket kit from honda
vtec solenoid gasket is easy too just take it off and clean it and put on the new gasket and put it back on
dizzy is around 150~

Re: Alright guys, I got an Update...

My suggestion? Shop around for parts on reputable places and buy them yourself and do as much work on your car as you are able to do by yourself.

$800 is a lot of money for those few items & labor. And if he is like any other shop, it won't be "just" $800... There are ALWAYS those "other" expenses that come up.

Re: Alright guys, I got an Update...

BTW... You may NOT need a distributor... Your miss could just be plugs, wires, or the distributor cap. If a distributor is bad, the car wouldn't start or would die once it gets hot, or have random misfires on all 4 of the cylinders. Not just 2 cylinders constantly.

^^^I totally agree^^^
I was thinking about getting this:

DEWALT Mechanics Tool Set (204-Piece)-DWMT72165 - The Home Depot

What yall think? would this be enough to do the spark plugs, dizzy, Vtec solenoid, and Valve cover gasket?
I a noob to torque wrenches, don't know what I need to look for, I will be using it for the spark plugs and lug nuts.

@everyone else, I take the lude tomorrow after school. I was just thinking of letting him swap out passenger & driver axles, I saw the driver axle and the rubber was torn/worn.

I was surprised when he said that I needed to get a new VTEC solenoid, (I was like BS) I am pretty sure I just need to get a new O-ring, which is like $1.58 vs the $135 quote he gave me for a new unit and labor.
I am planning on doing everything else my self.

Thanks for yalls help, greatly appreciated!

Re: Alright guys, I got an Update...

^^ note all the stuff this set has like pliers, pry bar, dental picks, swivels, a mirror, a magnet, feeler gauge, extensions galore, ball peen hammers. I mean it's pretty complete for maybe $200 more? I dunno. But in time you will need/use those items. And buying one at a time is a lot more expensive.
But yeah, that first set or the Dewalt shown would get you going good.

I showed the green box because for the money it's the best one I've ever seen. Way nicer than Craftsman twice as expensive. I almost bought one. But my projects were going to cause me to outgrow it quickly so I opted for a larger storage set up.

Re: Alright guys, I got an Update...

Dont forget some individual sockets that are strong. You will run into SO many things that dont come loose easy. I blew open a 14mm socket on on of my driver seat lugs. Id recommend a very strong 10, 12, 14, 17,and possibly 21 mm for the hell of it, impact quality. And something that can bite into bolt heads that have been stripped/ mangled 51mTRcSPKvL.jpg. I've bought tons of new bolts just from running into old stripped ones. Or stripping them myself, or just bad tools being damaged. I have ruined parts by buying bad tools before, even almost hurt myself with bad vice grips.
As far as a torque wrench goes, all u would need is a beam type for the valve cover nuts. I picked up a beam type for about 15 dollars and its pretty accurate. U just want to reach that torque in one motion. Most of the ratchets and sockets u will need are 3/8". Some needs more and some needs less, but you will run into those later, not with this specific job. Screwdrivers can mess things up real bad if u are not careful, or the screwdriver can get messed up if its cheap metal. I cant lay everything out here in point form, cause its ALOT! But, you will see what needs to be pricey and what doesnt in time. Be gentle and move slowly when dealing with your spark plugs, especially when re-threading them.

Anti-seize, copper, Copper-Anti-Seize-Lubricant.jpg get to know it.

^^ thissssszzzz!! And a sturdy 19mm for the lug nuts.
I got by on 1/4" and 3/8" until motor swap time.
Eh, here n there the 1/2" stuff got used for big bolts.

Re: Alright guys, I got an Update...

For you? Yeah. Pay somebody.
$200 each is $125 per axle plus $75 to install each. That's about right.
Experience is a must there. Easy to screw up the spider gears, rip the boot, install the splines incorrect, injure the axle seal in the differential, ruin the ball joint boot, etc etc.

Tell your mechanic you want new axle seals too. Old ones may leak. May not. But it'll add about $25 to your bill, maybe $50...well worth imo.

Took me 3 days (and 2 axles) to do my first one. I'm down to 20 minutes now though.

Wings meant 'easy' not east. That guy is digital while we're all anolog ...he may have been torquing a harmonic balancer bolt with 1 hand and typing with the other.

Just a few minutes ago I met a junior that got his prelude a few days ago.
I was excited I think I might have scared him.
I don't think he is a car guy at all.
He was just like "yea, my dad bought a car for me" . He's got a 2000 automatic with 190xxx miles.

That gave me some confidence.

^^^ I totally agree. Pay him to replace the axles and do the rest yourself. And YES to the new axle seals as well. You might be able to pick up the axles and seals at you local parts store for less and save yourself some money as well. But he may not let you do that cause a LOT of shops make money on the "Mark-Up" of parts. Either way,

Make SURE you get the quote in writing AND itemized, labor included. And get a copy for yourself. Make sure it says in the quote that any additional repairs or parts requires your authorization or that it it written out that the "repair" is All inclusive at the $400. You gotta CYA with those shops. Not all are "crooked" but hard to find a good to honest mechanic these days.

What's the difference between like, Koni Yellows and some springs compared to coil overs? Aren't they both after market?

Re: Alright guys, I got an Update...

Coil overs cannot be easily compared to macpherson struts. With a coil over the spring goes on top of the strut. MacPherson sends the strut through the spring. Coil oversee are good cause they use the one needed at that moment, instead of both. Either the spring can compress in a corner, or the strut can absorb a bump. In MacPherson u have to first compress the spring to get the advantage of the struts absorbing qualities. I think MacPherson is outdated. Coil over is the way, long as it's legal...

Spring rates, rebound rates, price rates. Which all affect handling.
If u are not a hard core driver, kyb combo should be good. Just read up on spring rates and rebound rates. Hard core would be TEIN or buddy club, etc...

Re: Alright guys, I got an Update...

Alright just got back, so here is the plan. mechanic is going to do left axle and the distributor and if the right axle needs to be change he will do that as well. (Only the gasket needs to be replaced in the distributor, Ripped off? maybe, but I did have misfire codes, so not sure of the true cause)

So total price can be anywhere from 505 to 685 and I still have to replace gaskets.
I allowed him to swap out the distributor because he cautioned me that I could screw things up if the electrics and "sensors in the distributor get oil on them" (not sure about sensors in the distributor)

I am pretty sure I got ripped off but I would rather have a 100% functional car running right. We will what happens but I am going to need some guidance when the time comes for me to replace the gaskets.

Thanks guys.
