Icon1 Just to hear me B****

I have a 1998 5th gen prelude for a little over a year. I just bought brand new tires for $400 and not 24 hours later i have a ****ing blow out on the high way. but thank the lord i got the warrenty. other than the timing belt skipping time and bending some valves and costing me 3k on a rebuilt engine not much has gone wrong.
Going on a month now my car decided not to turn over.
[Step 1: Check the battery!]
I did, everything works fine, battery wise, seeing its pretty new.
so i went to my brother, and he had the great idea to take my valve cover off to check for oil leak. saying that oil could be flooding my spark plugs, Not knowing thats probably the most expensive thing to check for this problem . wouldnt you know it, full of f***** oil, now im not a car wiss but bad or good, it was like seeing your own blood for the first time as a kid, i depend on my brother and this forum. of course i go with his idea to buy knew spark plug wires, spark plugs and also have to get a knew valve seel.
i order the crap and then im stuck with -$100 and a couple weeks of walking to work but no dice, still wont turn over, my friend said it might be my starter
[Step 2: Check the starter! ]
well i hit it with a hammer and it cranked, yayyy success, the next morning it cranks with out the hammer trick, wow im lucky as s*** so i drive it to work blasting my system, happy that at least i know the problem now, and i just have to carry a hammer for a while, oh well t tho
Get off work early, hammer trick doesnt work. i beat the s*** out of my starter while my friend cranked it, no dice. but it has to be the starter right? i mean theres no way its any other of the symptoms on the forum i read. i call my brother in law and he pretty much told me over the phone what everything ive done so far is stupid. now that i have no budget bc of the spark plug problem "which if it was a problem it could of waited" John, my brother in law told me that when i first did the hammer trick, i wasnt messing with the starter, i must of been nocking wires around, so there must be a short, which for me to bring it some where to get checked would cost around $200 $300 just to find out reminder im still not a pro on cars.
This guy rigs up two wires from my starter bolts, thru my system route, to a button on the side of my center console that pretty much makes it a key/push to start prelude, i turn the key to turn it crank, and tap the button to turn it over... i think im the first one you guys,i found a way to be different... its just until i get enough funds to find the cause, im takeing my best guess and say its probably a wire from the starter to something else.
How much is too much to save your prelude? and well, my first car. i spent 4k on it, 3 months later it took 3k to rebuild the engine. before hand the mechanic said i need to get out from under this car, i could sell it for maybe 1500. lose so much of my child hood savings, or technically go balls deep, spend 7k on a ****ing random ass car i wouldnt know that id grow to love, and only buy the best gas for it, learn for hours just to learn to change my own oil [ i have a learning disability ] wash and wax that sucker every week with only the best **** i can find and still get god damn stage II water spots that i cant get rid of, get brand new tires im still in debt to and cant even enjoy them, cheapist time for gas prices itll ever be in my life time and cant get a lick, and at the end of the ****ing day id do it all again, maybe im stupid maybe im too damn stubborn cuz ima TEXAN! AND WONT NOT GIVE UP! or maybe thats just the sign of a soon to be one day great car owner for a great car. i hope to have it for a while.
and im very lucky to have over come this page

Re: Just to hear me B****

Alright then. Glad you got that off your chest.

Sounds like that car has been a nightmare so far.
An old song says "know when to hold, know when to fold." Conventional wisdom would agree with your mechanic.

But this is a Honda Prelude you're talking about.
Take your time. Learn all you can and if your brother says xxxx, DON'T DEW EEEET!!!

If you have a nearby junkyard and some tools, go there and work on disassembling a civic or an accord a couple hours at a time. Take off a starter. Take apart a brake caliper...stuff like that. Before you know it, you'll be confident in working on your car yourself.
Buy something from them each time you go as a thanks for letting me learn thing. Nothing big. But buy a driver side inner door handle like yours..a shift knob...maybe the spare tire tool set. Stuff your car has like it, but better..
With junkyard cars a 'whoops' isn't on yours...

Then one day 'tadah!!! A 5th gen prelude will be there.

Dude I get your plight. I put in about $5-6k in my 97 only to be plagued with issue after issue..I even hoped space junk would fall from the sky and land on it one day. Next day the car cooperated. I put less than 150 miles on it in 014 due to one issue or another. Got all that fixed and now I aint sure the engine isn't choked with sludge. But like I said, we're talking about a Honda Prelude...so I'll soldier on and keep fixing stuff.

Re: Just to hear me B****

Been there...25+ years ago.
Mechanics used to say "you should sell your tools." I had a friend who so-called helped me. In time I learned to listen to what he said but go about things in my own way...usually a hammer wasn't involved my way.

Take his advice loosely. Don't sound like he's all that bad. But learn for yourself best you can. Before you know it, you'll be helping him.

True, he has helped me alot but hes not anything close to a pro. He's had about 6 different cars in the past 3 years. all have crapped out on him but because of that he does know a bit.
You dont have to use a hammer to get your starter working again, you can use a broom handle or anything to tap it with while you turn the key. though itll only last a few extra cranks.
Today I drove to walmart and put my gift cards to use to fill my tank up, and just got thru cleaning her, it sucks that shes pretty much on life support with this crappy rig job. do your know what wires would be causing this? one day i can either run up every wire untill i find the ones with shorts in them or bring it somewhere and they can hook her up but itll be out of my budget atm.
im going to look for local scrap yards for parts, that was a really good idea, i had to spend over $70 on f***** door handles, im sure i could of found something at a scrap yard for cheaper.

Re: Just to hear me B****

My buddy would end up using a hammer on just about anything...oil changes, belt exchange, you name it and he thought the solution was a ball peen hammer.

The wires could just be dirty. Go the diy section and download a service manual. It'll give you instructions on getting that starter figured out.

Now the 'handle' part of an accord is the same. The housing differs. The trick is to remove the pin and spring. Then using a small screw to hold the donor part to the prelude housing. There's a how to thread in the style/interior section here. Second page, near the bottom you'll see two threads.
I bought a spare to learn it. Then the second one for the actual fix.
