5th Gen Trunk Rust (THIS IS NO JOKE)

On my first post (my last post) I did state that I had rust in my trunk. I have attached three pictures. I cleaned out some of the junk that was in there.
I don't think the rust has gone through the metal yet, I believe it is still on the surface.

My question is: after I remove the rust. What should I spray on or coat with?
Is sanding, priming, and repainting mandatory, ASAP?

Re: 5th Gen Trunk Rust (THIS IS NO JOKE)

Clean it up with some light scuffing and spray some matching rustoleum paint to protect from further rust. Replace those tail light gaskets asap.

Re: 5th Gen Trunk Rust (THIS IS NO JOKE)

^^this.
And if paint match is a big deal coat over that with some rattle can paint match stuff.

I poked a nail hole in my trunk at the low spot. No more 'surf's up' inside the cab.
Kept it nice n dry until the leak got fixed. Then a bung was easy to make with bondo before coating it.

There were just over 58,000 5th gen cars sent to America. About 55,000 have or had rusty trunks at some point. It plagued the 3rd gen cars also.
The ones that never had rust are garage queens.

Whenever I buy a car one of the first things I do is pop a nail hole in the trunk. Because nearly every vehicle newer that 1975 I've owned had a water in the trunk at some point.

Re: 5th Gen Trunk Rust (THIS IS NO JOKE)

Thanks guys, I'm thinking drying, sanding it (I don't have orbital wire brush thingy), wipe it down good, cover it up with anti-rusting stuff, and then painting it.
That should do it fir na, ain't it?

Tanks!

Re: 5th Gen Trunk Rust (THIS IS NO JOKE)

most of that looks wipeable.. even steel woolable, such light rust, i see paint underneath, a stiff nylon brush could help and wet rag.. get it clean first then decide

Re: 5th Gen Trunk Rust (THIS IS NO JOKE)

I was just messing around with the language. Geesh, can't have any fun.
Got an update. I drained the water, dried it up a bit.
Didn't have any gloves my fingers were freezing, so rust removal a bit later.

My Auto-tech teacher told me to "suck up all the water, sand it down, then get Naval Jelly and 'paint' that over the rusted spots and then spray paint it".

What yall think pretty much same process right? This will do?

Re: 5th Gen Trunk Rust (THIS IS NO JOKE)

If it's simple and the supplies are available, it would be a crime not to do it..

Re: 5th Gen Trunk Rust (THIS IS NO JOKE)

In 2016, the trunk pretty much rusted out, so I "glue welded" in scrap metal, and put bedliner. looks good now, no more rust.
