Insurance!

How much do you guys pay for insurance monthly or every 6 months? I'm 19 and thinking of getting a 97 prelude base.

Re: Insurance!

Man, there are SO many variables! Location, tickets, company... You would be best shopping around...

I WILL tell you that Geico and Progressive were NOT the cheapest of the "Quality" companies. I went with Liberty Mutual. They beat BOTH of them by quite a bit.

And I will recommend to NOT go with these "fly by night" insurance companies that only charge $29 a month... as more often then not, they won't pay out, or will low ball your settlement when you file a claim... Or just drag it out "forever"... I've heard WAY too many horror stories.

So there's my "2 Cents"... Good luck with your search!

Re: Insurance!

^^ no. Your biggest obstacle is age. Statistcally speaking 19 year olds crash cars. It started with the first 19 year old driving his dads horse-less carriage, who was admiring another horseless carriage going in the opposite direction and rear ended the apple cart. (hence the phrase upset the apple cart?)
And today guess what? 19 year olds still crash a lot.

My 97 prelude costs within a few $ per month as my 95 ranger 2wd with 4 cylinder. It costs a little more because it's valued a little more in the case of it being totaled by another.

Honda vehicles are safety rated very high. Including the Preludes.

Like Tony said, Liberty is a good one. State Farm gets my dough because I like the personal service of having an insurance agent who knows me. Allstate aint bad...but also like Tony said, those other big 2 are rip offs. They take your money and let you check the yes box at dmv that you have insurance. But that's it.

Re: Insurance!

Im 18, have two speeding tickets and an accident on my record, and I pay $150 a month for my car and my truck, truck is on liability, car is fully covered with a $250 deductible. But I am on my moms policy, we have Progressive. If your getting your own policy good luck, I was quoted $350 a month and they hadnt even calculated in my tickets yet.

Re: Insurance!

Under your parents policy (if possible) you can expect around 100 a month with a clean record and defensive driving.

Re: Insurance!

If you can, get written quotes.

The devil is in the details. And the details should determine which way you go.
If you are a careful, defensive driver, you statistically won't need say, collision where you are covered when you rear end somebody, or hit a light pole from driving too fast.
However, you have an older car. You should consider towing as well as rental.... And definitely check into $0 deductable glass breakage.

Now if a bank owns the car until your loan is paid off, you'll likely be required to have full coverage, which includes collision.

Re: Insurance!

Geico is like 78.xx a month if you're a first year driver. I think Nationwide is second cheapest etc.. Geico has some 24 hour phone thing and a easy website management system..

When you get your speeding tickets pay an attorney $100.00 to get the tickets to improper equipment and keep your insurance cheap just never get caught 30 over else you have to take a class too that's 40.00, 30 min, and online. You can do it on your own if you get in with the DA with a driving school cert and money, but that's a headache

Inspection or reg. problems you can temp-sale or get pass. inspection to get thrown out completely with DA directly or attorney.

Even with liability you can still get your damage paid for if you have an officer sign off on a non-fault.

That's everything

Re: Insurance!

There is a lot of branching scenarios. What's in my post is everything that is needed to know outside of DWI stuff.

Most people don't even know liability means you get paid when it's not your fault. They think it only covers apposing settlements. I have the most basic stuff possible, if I get smacked I get an officer, and if they exist witnesses, to sign off. I buy a new car or parts with insurance money after a auto-body quote, or after accepting their up-from settlement..

In fact the ONLY reason for more coverage is alternative damage(flood etc) protection. Of course if you have a lean title from a lot they probably require the full coverage to cover risk since they are basically gambling tens of thousands of dollars when they give you a car.

That assumption is only partially correct. With only liability, if you hit someone, your insurance will not cover you. They pay for the damage you caused to the other vehicle. If someone hits you, it's their insurance company that will pay you.
