Paintd is on a distinguished road
Icon9 Beyond newb, 2001 Prelude, slowly losing my mind.

So, I just purchased a 2001 Base Prelude from some kid that bought it off another kid that just THREW parts at it. List of everything is below. If anyone has ANY ideas or suggestions of what could be the problem for ANY of the symptoms, it'd just be some fresh opinions and could give us some ideas.

First, the car as I bought it.
240k on the body.
30k on the engine, H22A4 VTECH.
Adjustable coilovers
exedy stage 1
megan headers
magnaflow muffler
fidanza flywheel
aem intake with k&m filter
new MAP sensor, new TPS, new O2 sensor, new fuel filter, new cv axles, new crank angle sensor, new spark plug tube seals.
However, CEL for codes 0300, 0301, 0302, 0303, 0304, 1399, and rattles.
(Quoted from kid himself)
---
Main problems:
1. SERIOUS surging idle, fluctuates from 1-3 the second the car starts, occasionally goes to 4.
1a. Also surges while driving, and lurches the car forward in any gear, but this comes and goes, regardless of speed.
2. When you drive it, ALL you smell is exhaust. I get high off the fumes the second I turn it on.
3. SOMETHING is rattling something FIERCE from 2nd to 3rd, 3rd to 4th, etc.
So, we replaced the spark plugs, the ENTIRE intake manifold (the EGR plugs had fallen into the old one, so we just got an entirely new one with bolt plugs instead).
4. The exhaust is a POS. I looks like someone handed it to a child to weld.
---
Now, what we've done:
1. Entirely new intake manifold with bolt plugs, since the old one's EGR plugs sunk into the bitch.
2. New spark plugs.
3. Changed the oil to Full Synthetic, high grade filter.
4. Flushed coolant lines.
5. Checked idle control, apparently this kid ****ed with it a lot INSTEAD of doing anything else, but that's not the main problem apparently.
6. Taken it to a mechanic. He said it might be a sensor, but the ones he suggested were the 'new' ones listed above.

Anyone have ANY ideas? I'm desperate, here, because my car is GOD-AWFUL loud and I'm losing brain cells.

Re: Beyond newb, 2001 Prelude, slowly losing my mind.

1) Search the General Tech area I believe for the 'Final Idle Problem' thread. That should give you a good idea on that problem and point you towards a couple sensor settings to play around with.

2) There's probably exhaust leaks all up in that bitch, or the EGR system deserves a good once over. Getting it rewelded would also fix #4 but I would probably take the opportunity to piece a new exhaust system together to work with the MagnaFlow that's on there. In the meantime, ensure the header looks sealed to the head and that there aren't any disconnects from pipe to pipe that would be cause for an exhaust leak.

3) Not sure I quite understand your rattling description but the most common rattle would be the exhaust heat shields. Annoying as all **** until you can get under there and tighten them down. If I'm misunderstanding, please explain a little more.

I lied on #1. That Idle thread is in the DIY section;

DIY Do-It-Yourself - Honda Prelude Forum

Also take the time to read through the other stickied topics there to assist you in diagnosing the CEL codes, and be sure to download the service manual to aid you.

Re: Beyond newb, 2001 Prelude, slowly losing my mind.

Pour ya a couple teaspoons of tranny fluid in the intake. She'll smoke like crazy for a few minutes, but you'll probably see your exhaust leak(s) soon.

If you don't like loud you could consider going to a stock type muffler and pipe.

X2 on the final idle thread. Take note of the fitv adjustment. Also ensure all your vacuum hoses are hooked up. And make sure your vacuum box on the intake manifold didn't break when you installed the new IM.

All Gen. Prelude Service Manuals
^^ scour the intake chapter for vacuum lines (if memory serves) and the emissions chapter for your idle woes if the final idle thread don't help.
