Flashing cel in vtec

I have had my prelude for about 3 months now 99 base model 5-speed,
Last night the cel light started flashing for the first time while in vtec. As soon as it came on I let off the throttle and let the rpms come down while still in gear the car got down to about 5k and the cel went off and hasn't came back on. Does anyone know what would cause this? The car runs pretty well and hasn't has any other issues beside the burning of oil. Any help or advise you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Flashing cel in vtec

do you have a chipped ecu? some times people get the cel to flash at a set rpm to let them know to shift.. like a shift light basically. my sisters old GSR had that also I remember from a while back.

The car is completely stock besides the intake and exhaust.
And the cel was flashing at between 6k-6500 RPM

Check to see if you have any codes.

Would I be able to pull a code if the cel is not on? Because the cel is only flashing in the upper rpm's, as soon as it drops out of vtec it stops flashing and turns off. I was reading that it could be a misfire but if that were the case shouldn't the car throw a code for that?

Re: Flashing cel in vtec

Mine does weird stuff sometimes and no cel. But codes are stored when it flashes.
Yes if it flashes it should stay lit after.

Basically it's a 'malfunction indicator lamp' that is commonly called 'check engine light'.

In the early emmisions days it was called 'an mil' and it usually meant the 02 sensor was malfunctioning or an egr issue, but somebody decided to combine it with misfires, and other stuff.
