car wont shift into gear

was driving through the parking lot, went over a speed bump and all of a sudden i couldnt go into any gear... i was stuck in a middle of a speed bump.. manage to get it rolling and drove home. i checked my fluid and it was topped off. i flushed my system (gravity bleed) for a bottle (then had someone pump a couple times). i can go into gear (exept 1st gear) with a gringing noise until it starts moving and the noise stops.i can visually see the slave cyl push the fork but im curious if its suppose to go farther. im tempted to buy a new slave cyl since they are pretty cheap. i havent had any clutch issues before and it doesnt feel like its been slipping. any input will be great

Re: car wont shift into gear

Have you noticed whether the clutch point of engagement has changed, (other wise known as the friction point), when letting the clutch out? The clutch actuator can be checked for leaks by gently pulling the boot back and inspecting it. In most cases if the clutch slave is bad you can see fluid running down the firewall under the dash. If neither of the (2) are leaking the internal seals can go bad allowing fluid to travel to both sides of the pistons in the slave and/or the actuator reducing system pressure and/or lessening the stroke, hence the hard shifting into 1st gear when the engine is running. I'm assuming it shifts into first ok with the engine off? I went through this about a year and a half ago. Ended up replacing both ends, twice. Used aftermarket parts first and couldn't get the system to bleed properly. Promptly returned them and went with Honda OEM. Problem solved.

Re: car wont shift into gear

Idk what u mean about the clutch actuator. U mean the master cylinder?? And clutch slave will leak around the firewall?? The clutch slave is located on the tranny to push the fork..

Re: car wont shift into gear

I confused. How did you drive it home if you couldn't get it into any gear? I assume you mean clutch fluid.

If I had to guess I would say the clutch broke something (probably one of the springs) and you will have to replace it. If that is what happened, it would not be slipping or doing anything weird up until the time it broke. In fact I'll bet money that's it. It would help if you told what year and model you had, how may miles, etc. when you ask any question about a car.

Re: car wont shift into gear

I manage to put it in gear with the car off, then I would glide through the gears to get home. I would had to work the shifter to put it in any gear, once I got it in it would grind until the car starts going from a dead stop. I was only 2 blocks away from home. I'm posting this on a 5 gen post so it would make it a fifth gen. And yes, clutch fluid/brake fluid. I had a feeling it was a spring, just felt Like a symptom of bad slave cylinder. Imma take a look more into it after thanksgiving.

Re: car wont shift into gear

So I manage to use a pry bar to push the fork a little farther out then what the slave cylinder gave me. It shifted smoothly but I feel there was a rattle in the tranny once I got it in gear.

Re: car wont shift into gear

well if you decided to grind it into first gear you might have screwed something else ... next time stop the motor , gear it in first and then start the car in gear ... much easier on the tranny .. starters are cheaper ...and if you where grinding while gliding through gears your synchros could be getting a little beat up ..my .02$

Update... Flywheel screws were coming loose. Wonder what the previous owner did...
