Odd vibration on takeoff

Just bought a used prelude a few months back. 150k miles. When I start my car, almost immediately after I start moving I experience a 1 second long vibration through my accelerator pedal. It's not loud or anything, just kind of annoying. It feels and sounds similar to going over those stop sign warning ridges. Is this normal, maybe the ABS system checking itself? Unless someone else can tell me if they have it, then it's probably not normal and I'll have to look into it.

Other info: ABS light comes on briefly after I start my car (before moving), then it goes away. So it's not constant. Checking my ABS codes, I get code 17 (left rear sensor stuff) and 81 (abs cpu).

Power steering pump is going bad and makes my wheel squeak sometimes. I doubt this could be the cause of the vibration, though.

Re: Odd vibration on takeoff

That is not normal for any 5th preludes I've driven Banshee.

I presume your car is a 5 speed.
A couple of questions based on that presumption...
- does this only happen in first gear? And only when take off?
-say once a day or everytime you take off?
-how old is your clutch system? (Thinking release bearing)
-are your axle boots in good shape as in rubber not torn and allowing dirt etc into the bearings?
- any clicking sounds when making hard left turn at slow speed? (Axle bearings wearing out)
-anybody run over curbs etc possibly knocking stuff loose? Suspension items like ball joints.
-can you ensure your half shaft is attached to the engine block securely with all three bolts. (Two if it's a converted to base tranny SH car)

Re: Odd vibration on takeoff

If it only happens once within 20-30 feet of starting the car, its the ABS system doing a check. It's a little hum/buzzing sound, right? My 5th gens always did it, and so does my girlfriends EK. Curiously, my '96 doesn't do it.

If it happens every time you pull away from a stop, that is definitely not normal. It should only do it once each time you start the car.

Yes, exactly. It's a buzzing vibration that is very brief and happens once every time I takeoff after starting the car.

If you think it's the ABS checking itself, then I guess I'll ignore it. But I've driven many other cars with ABS systems and they never did this, at least not in a way that I could feel.

My car is 2001 automatic, btw. If what you say is true, I'm wondering why SirSSpec says he's never felt it before.

Is it possible that it's only doing this because I'm getting ABS codes? Or do you think it just does this regardless?

Re: Odd vibration on takeoff

My 97 has never done that. My son's 2001 doesn't. Nobody I know with a 5th gen has ever spoken of it. Soooo....
Maybe it's normal, and maybe it isn't.

Re: Odd vibration on takeoff

My 2000 does it. I was told it was the ABS checking itself and I don't have any error codes.

I'm in the same boat as these guys. I never really thought much of it because it was so consistent, I figured it had to be some kind of system check or something warming up. Odds are your Lude is perfectly healthy

Re: Odd vibration on takeoff

My '98 lude did it as well only when accelerating off startup & I always assumed it was the ABS self check. Had that baby for almost 2 and a half years and nothing resulted from it. My '01 lude doesn't do it though but who knows. I'm sure you'll be fine ! Seems to be quite common.

Re: Odd vibration on takeoff

It's not actually a check. It is the ABS pump pressurizing the reservoir. The pressure bleeds out when it is stopped so it must pressurize it again when it starts. It needs the high pressure immediately (like 1500psi if memory serves) when it senses a slip of a wheel. Most cars do it, but some only do it occasionally because they hold the pressure better.

My NSX does it about every third time I drive it unless its been a couple months.

Of course we are only talking about the older cars not newer ones, which have a different type of system.
