Weird knock or tap sound on fresh rebuild - Help

h22a sleeved block with 88mm Wisceo pistons. Machine shop did all the clearances on the bearings. They numbered everything and I put the motor back together. Has H23 manual tensioner. This is not my first build.

Can't figure out this loud ticking noise coming from the bottom end. Here is a Youtube video I uploaded. Right at 0:37 mark you will hear distinct ticking sound.

Re: Weird knock or tap sound on fresh rebuild - Help

Sounded like something flapping, and faster than the rpm's of the motor from my celular phone kazoo speaker.

I forget where I read it but it said if you don't get the tensions correct on the t-belt it ends up noisy. But that almost sounds like something is dragging like a baseball card on an 8 spoke bicycle wheel or something.

I had a similar noise on my h22a4 prior to my swap. I did not investigate but i think others with the h23 manual tensioner conversion can elaborate. I am using the kaizenspeed manual tensioner so I would not be able to provide any help.

Would you want to open the timing belt cover and check the tension there. should be able to turn the belt 45 degrees, if more then it could be the tension.

Could this issue be subjective to something internal?

@Preluc. That's what I am afraid that it might be internal. Timing cover is already off and I have adjusted the belt 5 to 6 times already since it kept walking off the pulley.

I have the KS tune balance shaft eliminator kit but I decided to go with h23 tensioner.

As far as internal noise, machine shop assured me that the clearances are with in specs. Although they are on the loose end. But even then I shouldn't have that noise?

I check with stethoscope and I get ticking if I hold the probe on the oil pump. I don't hear it that much on oil pan. But it's all over the place on timing belt side so it was very difficult to pinpoint.

Timing belt walking should tell you that is the problem. Go with a new H22 auto tensioner. Hey, it's $45 or so and it works.

The manual type will work, but you have to set it right. Auto one does it...automatically. No belt walk.

Belt is not sliding anymore. It was too tight so I loosened it up a little bit which fixed the belt slide issue. I posted that video after fixing the belt issue. Crank looks smooth as well no wobble. So not sure what that sound is.

Heading to the dyno tune on Nov 11th so would be nice to have some suggestions before that.

Re: Weird knock or tap sound on fresh rebuild - Help

It turned out to be worn Rod bearings. I have not checked the mains yet.

Rod bearings are scratched. This motor only has 80 miles on it so somehow dirt or metal got in there. I hope pistons are ok.

Now instead of putting new bearings in I am thinking about pulling the motor and taking it to a tuner to have it done right.

What do you guys say? Put new bearings in and see what happens or pull the motor and take it to machine shop?

Crank looks fine. It's a regrind crank so I am guessing there was burr left in the pores that came out when 80psi oil pressure went through them.
