Power Steering noise

Hey guys, i'm new so sorry if this has been covered already.

I just picked up an 00 5th gen, all is well besides a noise my power steering is making.

After some browsing on youtube I have this exact noise and it worsens with each turn of the steering wheel

I do have a 30 day powertrain warranty, do you guys think it's a pulley, belt, or a bad psp? *Fluid levels are OK.

Re: Power Steering noise

Does your fluid look frothy? Belt on too tight?

I've had that noise as well, which turns out that I needed a new PS pump, after ruling out belt and any leaks. Got a remanufactured one from Majestic Honda for a few hundred.

Re: Power Steering noise

^^ frothy means trapped air. Belt too tight can crunch the bearings. Too loose on the other hand could also be worth checking out.
All Gen. Prelude Service Manuals
^^ service manual tells ya how to diagnose.

Re: Power Steering noise

I had the same problem on my 98. At first it would only happen when it was raining or very humid. Eventually it became a constant thing, and would still get worse as I turned the wheel. Fluid and belt tension were fine the entire time. I paid $50 for a used one from a part out and replaced it and the whine was gone instantly The pump had just gone bad. I don't blame it though, these parts are starting to get pretty old.

So my advice is to just replace it. New or re manufactured will set you back a bit, but I went with used and everything turned out good.

Good luck and happy luding

Re: Power Steering noise

To properly bleed your power steering system of air, remove the red cap from the reservoir and start the vehicle. Make full sweeps of the steering wheel from lock to lock about 5 - 10 times.

a whirring power steering pump is caused from stress on the system. FIRST, make sure your inner tie rod/steering rack boots are bone dry; there should be NO fluid in there. If you cannot detect a leak of any kind the most likely cause is a failing power steering pump. I would suggest flushing out the burnt fluid the best you can if you replace the pump and let us know what you find !

later.

Re: Power Steering noise

If you do the side to side air bleed thing, either do it with tires off the ground or while rolling to prevent flat spots...
