Previous owner is an idiot

Hey guys,

So I drive a 2001 Honda Prelude SE, have had it for a few months now and I love it (had a '98 base before this), just thought I'd ask you guys a quick question.

I asked the previous owner if he filled it with 91 octane and he said he would fill it with regular (87 octane here) and fill it with 91 once every few fills. Seemed like the 91 octane every few fills was bullsh*t but who knows. Point is he filled the car up with 87 octane for a few years. As soon as I received it I started putting in 91 octane and haven't changed the quality of fuel since. Car runs perfectly fine besides a little lower then normal in terms of gas mileage,I was just wondering if you guys think he has reduced the life of the engine by using lower grade fuel or anything. Lemme know, thanks guys.

I don't think running low octane gas would cause any permanent damage. The engine has various sensors which allow the timing to be adjusted accordingly. Here in Okinawa I have a 98 SiR and I run 86 in it because that's all that's available on base, this car has been run on this gas for many years both by me and the previous owners. My car runs great, there is a little bit of pinging but that's about it.

Re: Previous owner is an idiot

If you use 87 octane and it doesn't ping under heavy acceleration or going up hills, (Not sure where you are, if you even have hills where you are) then all is good. The problems happen when you consistently drive any car and it pings while driving it. If it's not pinging with 87, then 91 is doing nothing for you, unless you advance the timing or make mods and such, thus causing pinging. If you want to do something nice for your car, spend that extra few cents a gallon on some quality gas from one of the "Big 4" that put detergents in the "Regular" unleaded. THAT will help keep your car fuel delivery system clean, thus extending the life of your car.

Hope this helps explain the answer to your question.

Valero and Sunoco are USA refined.

Your car is probably fine. If it aint smoking real bad, don't sweat it. If it has begun to lose oil through the valve seals, no biggy until it begins to foul plugs
