Checklist for H22A4 to H23A swap *Engine AND auto tranny*

Well i've been looking through so many threads on so many forums...PO, PP, Honda tech.....but i plan on buying the H23A engine from ebay WITH the auto transmission included and just do a full swap into my 97 base Prelude.

I've found alot of useful info such as switching to OBD1 and replacing oil pump but i'm a little confused as to what else i'll need to modify to get it to work properly, pass inspection, etc. Please help me build a simple step by step checklist for getting this done! Any help is appreciated.

I guess we can start off with what else i'll need to purchase, that i can't use off of my H22a4?

Thanks for any feedback!
P.s. my lude has been sitting in my dad's garage for 6 years...don't know if that means i'll have to replace even more parts

Re: Checklist for H22A4 to H23A swap *Engine AND auto tranny*

The h22a4 and the h23a are nearly identical engines with different internals. Most if not all accessories are interchangable

You will either need to put a new h22 oil pump on the h23 with cps and tdc sensors and swap the balance shaft gear over from your h22 along with your coil and distributor, or you will need to buy a rywire distributor adapter for usdm obd2 prelude to jdm obd2 (8) OR (10) pin, depends on # of pins in the h23 distributor plug. You will also need to reuse the h22 intake manifold because none of the sensors on the h23 manifold are in the same position or style, besides the map and tps on the throttle body

You will also need to reuse the h22 driver side motor mount, its two pieces, remove the timing cover, unbolt them from the side of the block and head, there are five 14mm bolts, four on the block and one on the head, and you will also need to reuse the top half of the h22 timing cover, the bottom half you do not have to change.

Lastly, you need the h22 crank pulley because it has a second smaller pulley to run your power steering, the h23 came out of a car with electronic power steering so it will not have the second pulley to run your ps pump

As far as the transmission goes im not sure, Im doing the h23 atm but im reusing my old 5 speed tranny so I dont have compatibility issues like you might have

Good luck!!

Luke's are always so wise! (my name is also Luke) ha

Thanks man i appreciate the info!! Yeah im not sure if the tranny will be a perfect fit either...all the info on this swap usually only pertains to the engine so we'll see what else i can find out about it.

anyone ever swapped an engine and tranny?

I would figure out what tranny you have and what tranny your getting and just do some research. Could be a difference in sensor locations, different plugs in which case you may have to swap sensors over from your old tranny, and so on.

Luke's seem to be pretty senseful people in my experience

Re: Checklist for H22A4 to H23A swap *Engine AND auto tranny*

-Swap top half of usdm h22 intake onto the h23 intake, the h23 has a different IACV that you dont wanna use (either throttle body works just fine, the h23 is a bit bigger)
-Replace the oil pump with an obd2 usdm pump
-Bolt up crank sensor
-Swap crank gear and harmonic balancer
-New cam/crank seals
-New timing belt/hydraulic tensioner or ks tuned tensioner
-Swap drivers side motor mount of the h22 onto the h23
-Use your h22 flywheel bolts if youre running a manual trans
-Use the h22 distributor and coil

You may need to over the h22 intermediate shaft
Also, I swapped over my vtec solenoid because the one on my h23 didnt have a little pressure switch. You may not need to but I did anyway. Someone tell me if I forgot anything. Best of luck on your swap! PM me if you get stuck and need help.

Re: Checklist for H22A4 to H23A swap *Engine AND auto tranny*

You should probably replace all four motor mounts. The driver side may be ok, but chances are good your front and rear are in sad shape.
Parts geeks has oem ones for a lot less than Honda charges. Use an impact 17mm deep well for the driver side mount. It's longer length is necessay vs the typical deep well socket.

You may break a connector or two removing the H22. Search out the Acura tsb 00-099, which tells you how to remove pins from the connector, then get a like connector from the junkyard and swap it out using precision screwdrivers.

When pulling the motor you may notice you forgot to unplug the ps switch or some other stuff. No biggy. Stop pulling up and unplug it.

Be careful of the knock sensor when pulling your old motor and inserting the new one. Everybody installs it then plants the motor. Half the time that fragile device gets damaged. It's not real hard to install after the motor is in. Before you put your axles back there's plenty of room when under the car.

Also there's a vacuum box that bolts to the IM. It's got a fragile connector that breaks easily. Go ahead and get a new one from majestic to avoid having to superglue that connector back on.

Watch for some soft screws. Honda used a buncha junk for screws on stuff like the map sensor and egr...they strip easily.

Crank pulley bolt on the H23 WILL be a pita to remove. Use a pair of 1/2"x 25" long Harbor Freight breaker bars. They're like $17...
A 19mm impact deep well socket on one and 50mm pulley grabber tool on the other.

Use 1/2" tools for removing your exhaust like the header. And again those breaker bars will be your friend.

Lastly, clean your egr and ports while it's all disassembled. Much easier while it's taken apart.

Take your time. Check everything at least twice as you go. Use a torque wrench when reassembling.

Optional:
Credit card with $10,000 limit. Go buy a tool chest, move near a Sears and Harbor Freight, not far from Lowes.

I have a question about this swap. If you want to buy upgrade parts for it such as header, cams, intake etc. do you just buy what you would buy for the H22?

Yes. The blocks on the h22 and h23 are identical. The heads are the same on certain years, except for 2000 & 2001 h23s have a pde head, not p13. Only difference is crank, rods, and pistons. Almost everything else is interchangeable.
