how to: install accord radio pocket to 5th gen prelude

I recently acquired a nifty Accord radio pocket from member Wings8806 complete with mounting screws. This thing wasn't hard to install. But it requires some trim work to your radio frame. I'll call it 'the bezel' or 'frame' for this thread.

In searching for how to's either they were incomplete or threads were broken. Now Wings did help me by showing me a few pix of his install. My goal was to be able to re-use the bezel for my factory pocket if I choose to later.

Parts and tools:
Phillips screw driver
Door panel remover tool and dental pick
A dremel or a hacksaw blade. Dremel should have grinder and sander bits.
Plenty of light.

Optional:
Music
Cold beverage
Magnet bowl

Ok now the how to with pix:
Unplug hot wire from battery first. Well, first know your radio code or write it down.

I try to be wordy so folks who can't see the pix can still get a sense of what to do;

Step one:
Acquire radio pocket from an Accord.

Step two:
Remove radio/climate control trim

I used a dental pick to get it started. Start at the bottom in a corner. At the top this trim is mucho fragile. I reccomened a pair of dental picks for the top. One on the top at the same time as one on the side. Keeps you from cracking the corner of the trim. Pry loose with door panel remover once the clips are unfastened.

Step three:
Remove radio frame. Should be 4 phillips screws, two on each side. Once they are out pull frame out, unclip radio and antenna. No pic for that part.
Now remove the radio and door-less pocket from the frame.

Here comes the tricky part. Not hard at all and you get to use your Dremel.

Step four;
Trim the bottom of the frame so the pocket will set down on the frame proper and mounting screws will line up with holes.

There is a ledge and a lip that need trimming. Ledge trim allows pocket to slide forward in frame correctly. Lip trim allows the set down on the frame properly. I trimmed about 1/4" wider than the pocket so as to leave some ledge and lip on each side if I choose to re-use my factory pocket again. The grinder disc did 99% of the job. Sander disc mainly cleaned up frays and birrs. Repeated light passes will keep the plastic from melting so much.

First the ledge was removed.

I used repeated light passes with the grinder disc and cleaned up with the sander disc. The frame has a line you follow. Just take your time so the plastic don't melt. Took about 10-15 minutes.

Next the lip was removed.

I used the sander to remove the lip. Took about 5 minutes of back n forth grind/clean/grind/clean procedure. Just grind it down to the lower level.
You can see I left some of the outside edges for the factory pocket to set on if need be.

Now trim the pocket door hinge bottom

Because I chose to keep some of the outside edges, the door hinge was too long. About 1 minute of grinding with the sander disc got it short enough.

Now the final test fit. I did multiple test fits along the way to discover how much plastic had to be removed and where.

I liked the final fit. I cleaned a few birrs with the sanding disc and then it was time for the radio/pocket fit into the modified bezel/frame.

Fit looks factory, huh?

Step five:
Reinstall the radio and pocket mounting to frame screws. Small Honda trim screws work fine if your pocket does not have screws.

Step 6:
Reinstall your set up opposite of how you removed it. Put back your battery's hot wire, and reprogram your radio.

There ya have it. Enjoy your new stash box.

^^ how it looks in Ole #97

Any better ideas, comments, questions and critiques are always welcomed.

Thanks Clinton. Many ahead of me have done this. But when I saw how cool it looked in Wings8806's car, then he had one for sale...

This one came from an 01 Accord if I'm not mistaken. I think Wings still has 1 left for sale in the fs 5th gen parts section. I got it from him.

Couldn't have done it without your help.
I saw some interest in your fs threads, then didn't find any 'modern' how to articles so I thought "why not?"

I love it when people think out of the box - that is what makes this life so interesting.

Me too sir. Don't know if Honda anticipated somebody might do this or what when they designed the Accord, but the screws lining up with a slight mod makes me think one of the fellows in lab coats thought it would be cool to have it in his Prelude. Many of their engineers owned Preludes.

1) my car came addicted to nicotine and prefers the ashtray to a spit cup.
2) we will soon know as we're going to install one in a car with a Sony HU. If the bottom of the radio mates to the top of the pocket we're good. If not, we'll see what will work and add it to this thread for that particular radio.

Re: how to: install accord radio pocket to 5th gen prelude

^^ radio pocket below a Pioneer head unit. Actually no mods necessary to the frame for that set up. You can see a bit of a gap at the bottom that's not present using oem head unit. A mod like above would make that disappear. But we were stoked at the outcome.

^^ installed
