Aloha, Im new to the car world but am forcing myself to get one since my v8 gets 8 mpg. I have always liked the 3rd gen ludes and am prob going to get one. I have about 10 k to spend on one. Im thinking a 98 sh. Tell me about the motor/tranny please. Whats stock whp and what kinda bolt ons besides forced induction will get more a big boost. I know where ur coming from, hp 195 gas millage 21-27 so on and so forth, but those are just specs. Yall are the ones that love and drive these things everyday, not a guy working for a magazine to put out specs on a car.

welcome to the site.

the first thing you need to learn about the lude is: it's not a civic. they come tuned pretty well from the factory. that's not to say that there's room for improvement. but expect to pay a lot more than the civic tuners. that said, what are your plans? f/i or n/a?

i would love to f/i but for some reason, i want to keep it all motor. My mom has a turbo beetle she beefed up so I can play in that when I want.
I think for the most part I want to do headers, maybe new rods and pistons, short throw, exhaust....prob an apex tuner and a nopi girl for the front seat lol. What are the cams like? I know how the vtec works with em, but is there any need to upgrade them?

Stock WHP for an SH is in the mid to upper 150's.

They usually make ~6whp LESS than a non SH car..........that expensive diff DOES suck down a little power. SH's are heavier too (by 60-80lbs), so are actually doubley handicapped in a straight-line battle.

They'll eat up a regular Lude in the twisty's though..............

Well, let me tell you what, you get me a nopi girl and i'll find out ANYTHING that you want to know =D TK SO if one of my favs =D *drools* God but the chances of a hispanic guy getting a hot asian girl like that are zip to non =( Damn me and my spanish speaking skillz!

but anyway- i would say don't plan for anything yet, specially if you don't have a good source of income and the ten k is all you've got to play with- get the car and make sure you get a really nice one or you'll spend whatever is left over on fixing whats wrong...drive it a while see how you like it then if you're not satisfied start thinking about mods. Just know that the car comes tune like a sports car, so whatever you do you'll have to spend alot of money to do the job right and keep the car reliable, if you go cheap the car will take a crap eventually...

If you want a "project" car that you want to get 300 hp or more out of then you're better off getting an american made car, another kind of import that isn't tuned like a prelude and doesn't have a compression ratio as high as the preludes because if you want to see 300+ hp with out tearing up the motor you're going to have to force induct it, and even when doing that, you HAVE to do some internal rebuilds in order for the car to be dependable and give you that power out put as much as you want to use it with out melting/breaking/burning/ or melting something.

But if you want to just DO something, ignition upgrades is what i'd suggest...better spark plugs(stock wires will be fine for now)better distributor cap and rotor, new ignition coil, i would upgrade to a K&N air filter just for the fact that it lets the car breath better, but do not call it a mode, because its not, lol....its a filter..*cough* that alone will let you save a bit more gas, the car will be more responsive which you will notice(but only if you drive your car stock for a while) it will also give you about a 10hp gain which you will not feel but its there...doing an intake and headers i do not recommend because if you do not upgrade parts that complement those you will not see much of anything, you'll just waste more gas... an SH is rated at 19.4 mpg city, 23 highway, but if you're hitting your vtec, see it as 13 city, 16 highway, lol! so think about what more power will do for your mileage!

But if you want a car to handle corners an SH is it, it comes with a system called ATTS, which transfer more power to the outside tires to make you hook better and take turns with more speed and minimal slippage! its fun i've taken some pretty sick turns on the freeway at about 90 and i notice minimal slippage, just watch out for the fact that your car is front wheel drive and if you take a turn facing down hill a bit, your rear end WILL swing around and you'll become bestfriends with the wall or the face or whatever is keeping your freeway away from the rest of the world!

I would suggest a cold air intake, better spark plugs, and weight reducing mods for starters.

well with 10k and you thinking about going n/a, that's not a lot to work with. n/a is expensive, and you'll probably spend the bigger part of that 10k on the car. i'd say pick up the car, see what kind of condition it's in, give it a good tune up if necessary, then drive it like that for a bit. get used to it in stock form first. ludes were built to be good handlers from the factory. they're heavy, so you're not going to do too well on the straight line. corners and hairpins are where we rule... if you know how to handle the car.

Yea I agree, drive the car stock for a little while and get used to it. LEARN how to drive it then think about adding mods. The ATTS is fun to play with. You can't really feel it too often unless your taking some serious corners though. That 10k will go fast though.

Yea man the lude is a beautiful car, comes with all kinds of nice options, dont get me wrong, shes fast, but not a race car. If you remove all the nice things that come with it, its not really a lude anymore...

TEL had a pretty badass N/A SH. I think it put down 228 whp if I remember correctly. Now he's got rid of the ATTS unit and a true LSD tranny.

Search the forum though. There's plenty of info on how to mod your 5th gen, SH and base.

Let me tell you guys that driving one of these cars is like driving around in a turbo charged car/ gas wise (SH models) i was driving today on the freeway on my way to work doing around 105 and let me tell ya i could almost see my needle on the gas gauge move and i ran like that for maybe 2 minutes.....these things guzzle gas- i don't want to even know what people who are constantly hitting the vtec do LOL! jesus....on a better note though- i scared the pants of a 350z that tried to take me on the corners, lol he started chasing me when i was going fast trying to "race" me and i lost him nasty on the turns, he'd break i'd give it more gas lol
