Weird issue

I bought a 97 prelude about 2 weeks ago that was owned since he bought it on 12/16/96 by an older Lawyer. He had all services done by Honda, and has never seen a winter, as such, has not a single spot of rust anywhere, above or under the car. But enough about the car, and now onto the issue at hand. Any time you accelerate, no matter the gear, 1st-5th, and reverse, there is a clicking sound that comes from both sides of the car, that sounds similar to axles going bad. But nothing looks wrong at all under the car, and I am completely stumped. It only happens when you first accelerate, but if you just hold the gas steady while driving, there is no clicks, but soon as you shift, and accelerate, the cloicking happens yet again. Any help is greatly appreciated

Re: Weird issue

So it happens through only a certain RPM rather than a certain speed? Hondas have a notoriously loud valvetrain, and even louder when the valves could use a lash adjustment. Have you tried standing in front of the car to listen to it in neutral? Try revving it up with the hood propped open to see if you can hear anything similar.

Re: Weird issue

Its nothing with the valves, sorry, I should had included some background about myself in here as well. This would be my 12th honda ive owned, civics, del sols, accords, 2 elements, and an s2k for all of 3 days(offered 5k more then I payed so I couldn't say no even if it was my dream car).
I will give an example.
Lets say I am doing 35, in 4th gear through town. If I am holding steady at 35, then let off the gas, then give it gas again, the click is able to be heard, from both sides, but at seperate times, maybe a half a second apart, it may click 2 or 3 times, then it stops.
If I pull into my drive way, and shift down to first, as I drive out back it clicks a few times as well till I come to a stop. If I stop then reverse out of the driveway, because im feathering the gas as I back out, it clicks as well.
I am just clueless, the car is 100% stock...ok, not 100%, only thing I changed was the shift knob, but besides that stock, hasnt been beat on ever, and myself I havent even taken it above 4k(highway) I just want this to last as long as possible, because aside for the s2k, this is my second dream car from Honda.

Re: Weird issue

Try putting the car on jackstands and checking to see if there is any play in the wheels, driveshaft or differential. Also check to make sure your half shaft is bolted to the block as if it's loose you could have a half shaft bearing not running true straight line 100% of the time.
Could be your splines in the drive system are worn and have play or your axle knuckle bearings are in need of a grease change from the car sitting a lot.

Also check your exhaust pipe. These cars are notorious for ghost sounds from contact with heat shield or loose/missing bolts in the heat shield over the cat convertor.

I just described stuff I had to fix on my car. But 'clicking' at take off sounds axle/differential related to me if it aint piston or valve related.

Re: Weird issue

Thanks, I will give that a try tomorrow. The last thing I need is for something major to go wrong on a car I have no experience working on.
