What oil are you using?

About 2 months ago I picked up a 2001 Prelude Type SH running a stock H22A4. About a week after I got it, surprise surprise, I'm blowing clouds of white smoke on start up. It goes away after I've engaged either first or reverse, never smoking when I'm in any higher gear. This brings me to my question; which oil are you running? I'm running conventional 10w-30, but am thinking of moving up to 10w-40 as I'm going through up to a liter every week and a few days. The 'lude came with 5w-20 in it and has been running conventional for as long as I've had it, and the previous owner has had it. Any advice on how to slow consumption? I've read about oil additives I'm really not sure about some of the products floating around out there and if it will worsen my situation. I just picked up Lucas Oil Stabilizer but am most likely returning it after work because I've read many negative reviews on it and winter is around the corner (living in Canada) so I don't know if the oil stabilizer will damage my car on cold start ups. Any advice would be appreciated, whether it be a different oil recommendation or something to help with my oil consumption. Cheers!

Re: What oil are you using?

Sounds like valve seals if it only smokes on start up.

I'm running rotella t5 10w-40 and quart of mmo in mine for a couple hundred miles to clean it out then switching to same oil with a quart of the t5 10w30. Had I not got the t5 for $9 a gallon I'd probably use the dino rotella 3t for cleaning then switch to m1 hm since I use it in my jeep.

Here is a good write up on oil and you can look around bobistheoilguy also.

OIL LINK

Use a good quality filter also. I'd suggest wix. Napa sells their filters as silver, gold and platinum. If you are cheap go with silver. Don't let them talk you into proselect.

Here is the stp that was on mine when I got it.

Go back to 5w30, that's wat I use and use castrol gtx high milage with Lucas oil stabilizer. This is my recipe for my h22 lol, I have 160k miles btw and it's also a sh, I've been using Lucus for a real long time and I can trust em.

Re: What oil are you using?

White smoke has nothing to do with oil.

Condensation and coolant/water evaporating shows white out of the exhaust

^^ we here in va, we call that steam.

The blue-ish-gray-ish white stuff that smells like something is burning is oil related smoke.

Double post!! argh!!
Oh well, I'll finish my thought....

5w is how thin it stays when cold. 40 is how thick it stays when hot.
Use the 5w whatever you like best.

I like max life for the late 90's zinc content and the moly it has

Look at some recent VOA's or that link I posted. Low zinc and 0 moly in max life.

Re: What oil are you using?

^^ yeah bob-the-oil-guy articles taught me a lot.

One night I got a note from vtec98 about break in oil, zinc and stuff in regards to rebuilding a B21 and gaining max ring seal. It caused me to read, read, read. Thanks again blake.
Bob explains why Slick50 and all those old miracle additives caused engine failure and why todays blends with moly etc don't.

My 97 SH came with 5w-30 grade SH (ironically) as in some appreciable amount of zinc, but if memory serves todays is like SN..as in no zinc

Re: What oil are you using?

I was using Pennzoil High Mileage, but I got fed up with having to buy a quart of oil every time I had to fill up on gas. I did an oil change with motor flush and decided to go with Castrol GTX High Mileage (5W-30). Now I go through less than half a quart every fill up, depending on how often I hit VTEC that week. She's my DD so, I think the change was pretty well worth it.

I've also heard that if you run a heavier grade of oil you'll get a bunch of gunk in your motor. So I would suggest going back to 5W-30.

Happy Luding!

Re: What oil are you using?

Honda's Semi-Synthetic 5-30. Put in a quart every 1000 miles, this on a JDM H22A put in 10-12000 miles ago.
The Castrol GTX Hi Mileage sounds worth a try, except I'm getting oil changes from the local dealer way below what it would cost me.
