Transmission whining in P,R,N. Is the SS dead?

Hey everyone,

Long time lurker, first time poster. Hoping this awesome community can help me out.

1st off, let's save the "Shouldn't have bought a SS" comments, as I'm well aware of that now. So aware that I bought another used Auto trans in case this tranny bit the dust someday. Just wondering if today is the day (Also I couldn't do the 5spd swap due to finances, so this is the boat I'm in).

Please take a look at my video here for the noise it's making. YouTube

Just started yesterday, It appears to only happen in Park Neutral and even in reverse if I start reversing. In Drive gears, the transmission acts normal and doesn't slip or make any noise (You'll notice hard shifts in the video into R and D, and it's done that since I bought it. I'm aware that means the tranny is on it's way out, but it's driven fine like that. After 5 mins of driving, it shifts super smoothe even when I'm shifting hard.)

Any idea where this sound is coming from? I'm just trying to see if it's time to swap the tranny or not, or if it may be something like a stuck open starter.

Any advice (other than 5spd swap) is much appreciated! Thanks in advance

-Derek

Get the car lifted off the ground and secured with jacks. With the help of a trusted friend or family member have them start the car while you listen underneath to try and pin point the problem. If you have a heard time picking out the location of the noise use a screwdriver and touch it to the transmission and put the handle to your ear. But it sounds like it is possibly a bearing. I listened to the video, but without having much location of noise it is hard to tell.

Turned out that tranny met it's end, so I threw the used one in there that happens to be rebuilt apparently, and it's running better than ever.

Thanks for the views and comments!

Cheers.
