97 type sh alternator problems!

So all this began after I repaired the heater circuit for my primary o2 sensor. After I finished and started the car my speedometer would only work in vtec range (above 4500 RPM) but she seemed like she drove just fine. A few days later it began to develop a slight misfire and eventually led to the car dying. I had the alternator tested and it was bad so I replaced that and charged my battery.

Now the new alternator isn't charging at all I checked the battery with it running and it read about 12.6V. I checked fuse #14 and it looked OK so I'm stumped.

Any help appreciated!

Almost 50 views and nothing? D: A point in the right direction would be great since I'll finally have some time to work on it the next few days!

Ensure you picked up a working alternator(i have gotten bad ones before) check your wiring and connectors. I believe if you have a bad cell in your battery it wont charge up either, not 100% on that one, been a while for me doing diagnostics.

What's up fellow hoosier.

Stab in the dark but swap out the fuse and make sure. If that doesn't work start running continuity test on wires and make sure the plugs are in order. Where did you get the alternator?

I had a 2g and over the years had to replace both brushes and voltage regulator in that.

Just a temporary Hoosier ;) Only down here for school :)

I had planned on trying the fuse tomorrow although it looked alright and I got the alternator from an o'reilly's around the corner. This thing has got me spinning. My civic was so much easier!

I'd check fuse and plug first. if that doesn't work take it back and tell them you want one that works. It's fairly common.

Any chance you know anyone with a nonmolested instrument cluster for a manual in indy?

I went and got the alternator tested and replaced the fuse after work, same issue =/ The alternator is only reading 12.1V with the car running.

Re: 97 type sh alternator problems!

That has to be bad. Take it back. That is less than a good battery.

I shall go back tomorrow and get a new one, now I tested continuity from alternator to battery post and got OL. I believe this to mean a fuse is blown? And would that blown fuse keep my speedometer from working?

Re: 97 type sh alternator problems!

Download a service manual from the diy section. Check the chapter 23 for all your ground wires

Check your ground wires under the hood, remove the negative cable at the source, clean it and replace it. If your battery cables are aftermarket or have lead terminals, remove and re-attach them as well.
Couldn't tell ya how many times I thought my battery or alternator were bad due to less than stellar wiring connections.

Re: 97 type sh alternator problems!

It's unfortunately a bit dark outside now so it'll have to wait. I am still concerned about the speedometer not working though?
