Maybe i wasn't clear enough on my last thread
I haz a CEL, what's wrong wif mah car?!?!!??!!?!
i was not asking for you to "take a stab in the dark" and guess whats wrong with my car, i was simply asking about the product i used and i was seeing if anyone has any experience using it, or others like it.
I do appreciate the advise about getting them to run my cod.
Let me explain i went to O'Reilly's auto parts to run my CEL and what they printed out was:
TROUBLE CODE : p0420
Vehicle: 1998 Honda Prelude
Base --L4 2.2L2156cc H22A4 FI MFI GAS DOHC
CODE DEFINITION: catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold (blank 1)
Possible Causes:
*Catalytic converter damaged or has failed (deteriorated)
*Check for air leaks at the exhaust manifold or in the exhaust pipes
*Check for poor fuel quality and/or contaminated fuel
*Front HO2S older (aged) than the rear HO2S (HO2S is lazy)
*Front HO2S or rear HO2S is contaminated with fuel or moisture
Reported Fixes:
*Replaced catalytic Converter(s)
*Replaced Oxygen (O2) Sensor(s)
*Replaced Catalytic Converter Gasket
*Replaced Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) Blank 1 Sensor 1(B1S1)
*Replaced Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) Blank 1 Sensor 2(B1S2)
once again the thread from last night wasn't only about my CEL, i was more worried about what in the heck i put in my gas tank. i was going to save all this other information for another day when i had time to actually be active in a discussion.
i used a product called CATACLEAN (recommended) by the people at O'Reilly.
It claims to:
*Clean catalytic converter
*Clean oxygen sensors
*Cleans fuel injectors
*Cleans cylinder heads
I googled it before i used it and it had nothing but positive reviews( remember this is my first car, we learn from our mistakes ) i followed the directions correctly but my CEL is still on, so either this wasn't the problem but it still fixed some things, or i just got ripped off, id rather know that i waisted my time and money with a product that DID work but just not with what i thought it was going to fix, other than knowing i just put random junk in my tank. so if anyone has any knowledge about CATACLEAN or other brands like seafoam, what should i be looking for that will indicate that it did its job. and also if anyone is having the same codes read on their CEL how did you go about fixing it? and what should be my next task.
I have a 1998 prelude with over 150k miles on it, its my first car and i want it to last as long as possible, i spent $4,000 on buying it and then 2 months later my timing belt skipped time and it took $3,000 to get it running again so you can see why im so worried about this.

Re: CATACLEAN************

My B, yea you weren't exactly clear with what you were asking about. But I'm still keeping that thread locked and stickied cuz so many people do exactly that; "I have a CEL.... WHAT'S WRONG WITH MY CAR!?!?!?"

Personally I've never had any luck with any of those treatments/additives/liquid fixes.
99.999% of the time whenever I've had a CEL, it's been a mechanical issue. I'll put money on your problem is either a bad o2 sensor and/or cat.

Re: CATACLEAN************

I searched for the closed button before reading this thinking dag gone bro....

Now to read it...

Is your car running ok?

Did you disconnect your battery to reset your ecu after trying this 'miracle' product?

Like 2k said, more times than not stuff like that doesn't work. It may in your case.
Try tapping on your cat. If it rattles it's probably that the screen is failing. Buy an 02 sensor remover tool and take it off. Clean it with brake part cleaner. Ensure the wiring is completly intact.

And the code reader reads codes which are 'possible' problems. It's usually correct.
But recently my car started giving me misfire codes saying everything was wrong with practically everything in my car except...what was actually wrong with it. I changed out plugs, cap and rotor because they were fugly. Reset the ecu and viola. No more codes.

Can't speak for 2k, but what I saw was some crooked hat wearing kid with his pants half way to his ankles trying to be cutesy all speaking in gangsta talk asking members of a forum to read your mind.

Your follow up thread clearly articulates your situation and me personally am glad to see you came back.

Unplug your battery, count to thirty, one thousand style, plug it back in. See if the cel is gone and when (if) it returns take note of what was happening...such as idle or say over 4k rpms, heater/ac off/on etc.

And.. join advance auto mailing list. They have a lot of sales. I waited about 3 months for a code reader to go on sale. Got the $99 one for $49 and a soda pop. By spending over $50 I got 20% off so the reader was like $45. Basic reader, nothing fancy. Reads codes and resets the ecu if you choose to.

Pull of your cat and put it up to the sun, you should be able to see light through the honeycomb. If you don't then it's most likely clogged and you can try and soak it in a bucket of bleach or just replace it. It's also possible for the honeycomb itself to be broken up inside and clogged the cat, if that's the case the only option is replacing it.

well i do appreciate the help and sorry about my earlier post, before posting a thread i will make sure to preview it before hand.
besides this ive been researching cat converters and apparently where i live at there is no need for one to be legal on the road. my brother recommended gutting it but im a little bias to this and am going to try other things first. once again thankyou for the help so far i will update with any news

Must rinse with distilled water only. Minerals make metal corrode :/

My cat was clogged and I found this out because I had a loss of power and checked if it was clogged when I put on my catback. I decided to hollow it out for now and im going to buy a high flow cat soon.

Re: CATACLEAN************

P0420
I had this code and I believed it was the CAT or the Sensors.
I changed the both SENSORS twice once with DENSO then with BOSCH.
Still the P0420 came on.
So I put in a straight THRU pipe in and the P0420 still comes on after 40 miles!
No CAT and a STRAIGHT THRU pipe is in and still the code P0420 comes on.
Any suggestions?

Re: CATACLEAN************

You have removed your catalytic converter, and wonder why you still have a CEL related to it?

Take your car to a reputable mechanic and never try fixing it again.

Re: CATACLEAN************

Wow... these post never stop amazing me.

If you gut your cat, the second O2 sensor will not get the proper reading and will throw a engine light. The only way to run a test pipe or a "straight pipe" is to bi-pass the second sensor. If you do a little searching you will find the procedure to do this. Though Id imagine that if you are unaware of this, you should prob just buy a new converter. Besides unless you are trying to extract every bit of power you can, why would you want to go around poisoning the air we all have to breathe?

Id also recommend not trying to crap on Wing, he has more info on these cars than you could possibly fathom and is very willing to help if you just ask. Don't assume anyone "needs" to help you. The people here do it voluntary and bitching at them wont help.

Re: CATACLEAN************

The best part, people keep answering you but your not listening.

You could very well have solved the initial issue of a bad cat by removing it but you will retain the code because you now have no cat. Now the new O2 is throwing the code because the cat is missing.

Some people have luck with an O2 spacer to remove the O2 from direct exhaust gas flow and only take in metered amount of exhaust.

The NEW straight thru came with a Block bolt which I removed to put in the 02sensor, maybe I should try it with it in and the 02 sensor out?

Yes but I think I have solved the problem.
With a 90 dg Sensor extender.
They say it will work but not on ALL Vehicles but for $16.00 Bucks it is worth a try!
I will let you know
