K24 Block?

I've done a lot of search ing on this forum and others so I'm just going to ask:

Can I use a K24 block from a CRV or Element with my H22 head? It seems to be a popular block to swap into my RSX-S and use the K20 Z1 head.

I have 258k on the H22 that is in my '98 prelude right now and I'm sorta thinking the block might be beyond rebuild without sleeving. The ideal scenario for me be to just swap blocks and freshen the head.

Any and all info would be much appreciated.

Re: K24 Block?

If you have enough dough you can swap in that motor.

But another H22 would cost less.

Re: K24 Block?

Not sure if it's possible or even worth it. It definitely won't be a "swap the blocks" and call it a day thing. K24 uses a timing chain while the H22 uses a belt, different block means different sensor locations oil galleries etc. K series motors are flipped so your going to have to flip it again to mate up the transmission and that brings a whole other deal of problems. I'm not even sure if the H series transmission will bolt up to a K series block.

Too much crap to deal with. Rebuild the H22 or buy a H23A for 800 bucks.

Re: K24 Block?

Is an H23A aluminum or cast iron? I know there are H22 block variants (or is it H23?) that are cast iron. Found in Accords.

You know, I didn't think about the engine being flipped. I think the rotation is opposite also. Is there a good importer of the H23 block or can good low mile ones be found domestically?

Re: K24 Block?

All H series Heads/blocks are aluminum.

Bykfixer's son just bought a H23a so I'm sure he knows where to get one. Off the top of my head hmotorsonline.com and tigerjapanse.com are the two I know of. Never dealt with either or though

Re: K24 Block?

^^ thanks Joseph.

^^ my son bought from these folks.

Took about a week to arrive. They used R+L carriers who fork lifted it to our garage.

^^ dude putting the port-a-lift away.

Elspectro can give you the details of how to. It's not a simple plug n play thing. But it's not that complicated.
When done you have potential for a flatter torque curve down the road. But $ for $ you can probably do a simple swap of an H22 for about the same cost. The H23 does require a few dollars more than the initial cost to make it work.

Re: K24 Block?

x2 on dropping the k series idea...unless you just feel the need to spend a ton of money and time needed to do all the mods necessary for a k series swap...it's for sure a lot more than a 5th gen lude with 260k on it is worth...rebuild that h22

Re: K24 Block?

Ordinarily I'd agree with ya 9998. And in this case do but...
The reason we're doing a swap to H23 is because the previous owner paid a shop to rebuild his engine and they botched the job.
Motor smoked and burned oil like an oil heater. I suspect they got the hone wrong.
Ya gotta get the hone right if you rebuild. Porsche shops know how. Or find a shop that specializes in Honda/Acura if you rebuild.

And if you do folks around here sell jdm oversized pistons from time to time.
A guy has a set for sale right now in the fs/5th gen section...brb

Re: K24 Block?

Thanks for the info guys. I did check Tiger Japanese and their engine prices seem reasonable. They have a bad rep in the rotary community though. Yes, I also have an RX7. The prelude was my daily for years and I kept it in top shape with many improvements.

So it looks like a JDM H22 or H23 is what I need. Unless I buy those pistons and rebuild the H22 I have. A little wary because of what I read in my search and posted in this thread about the fiber re-enforced cylinders.

What is necessary to make the H23 short block work?

Re: K24 Block?

Since your Prelude is not your only car you should tear apart the H22 and see if it's worth rebuilding before you spend any money. Pull the head off and pull out the crank, rods and pistons and check the cylinder walls for any scratches. Measure them to see if their within spec or needs to be bored and go from there.
