97 type sh Help!

I bought my 97 type SH shortly before Christmas and it's never given me any troubles. About 2 weeks ago it started acting like the alternator was going bad (lights dimming and so on) I shut it off and it wouldn't start again. If I jump it she runs just fine but when I unhook the cables it'll run for about 30 seconds and die. I replaced the alternator today and it's still doing the same thing. Any ideas or advice would be appeciated!

Re: 97 type sh Help!

Do you by chance have a lighted pulleys? I have those on my SH, and have also noticed that the light do seem to dim a little more and then brighten as I rev my engine.

Also even though this is kind of obvious you did check your battery to make sure its not bad right?

Re: 97 type sh Help!

I'm not sure about the pulleys I haven't ever noticed that.

I don't have a multimeter to check the battery, it was stolen a while ago and haven't bought a new one but it is a new battery and when I took the old alternator off the pulley was practically locked up so I thought that was a safe bet. I guessed wrong apparently =P

Re: 97 type sh Help!

I am going to assume the gauges are not stock or they have an overlays. I have one of those El Glow Overlays on mine. To put it on I had to pull my needles off and put them back on. When you put the needles back on you can't push them in all the way else they will have friction with the gauges. If they are stock, then its possible the previous owner used to have overlays, and removed them before selling. If you pull the gauge cluster out you should be able to slightly pull the speedometer needle out so its not rubbing.

A dead battery can still cause problems. I recommend pulling the battery test it with a volt meter ( Harbor freight is a great place to get one cheap ), and then putting it on a slow charger ( 2 Amps ), until its fully charged. Then reinstall it, and make sure it has a good contact with the battery cables. Clean any corrosion off the terminals and cables. You can use strong black coffee to do this ( Uncle taught me this trick ).

Re: 97 type sh Help!

x2 on the battery...if your old alternator's pulley was locked up it wasn't charging the battery and your battery is probably drained to the point of no return, could have a had a bad cell in it. If a battery has been getting old anyway and then gets subjected to cranking and running the electronic systems in your car without charging you can pretty much suck the life out of it and once you replace the alternator it may still be too late. That actually just happened to me about a month ago. And if you don't have a chance to get a multi-meter right at the moment you can still take the battery out and take it to advance or autozone or whatever local parts stores you have in your area and you can have them test your battery, most of them do it for free
