97 Toy!

Just picked up this bad boy last month and with a great foundation to start with it has turned into my new favorite Honda. So far intake-exhaust, clutch, some new shoes, front end, and just ordered front/rear sway bars and rear bushing kit. Engine was swapped 40,000 miles ago and after working with B series in the past, the H22 is by far my pick. I plan on keeping the upgrades basic and have developed a huge interest in hitting some windy, canyon type roads. I will post pics and vids as I go, have fun out there and always watch out for the other guy......

Re: 97 Toy!

Nice!

Got any pix of your car you wanna share?

We don't eh-hem, uh condone crazy driving around here...
Instead...we obey all traffic laws, wear our seatbelts and never, ever exceed speed limits on windy canyon roads. (Wink wink)
Twisty roads? Eh, that's a different matter.
Have fun but watch out for falling rocks, deer and fellow prelude drivers obeying all traffic laws coming from the opposite direction.

Re: 97 Toy!

Oh absolutely, I get on it here and there but definitely outside my comfort zone. Wasn't able to get out on the road today much because of the weather but i did order my IAC Valve which will be in tomorrow so I can get rid of the idle jump. After that and the rest of the suspension she should be good to go. Here's a couple pics, I need to get out and snap some more when this weather lets up.

Oh yes I know the bug all too well hahaha. It's just the base and I have a feeling the SH would take some turns better but either way I'm happy with the engine and after all the suspension she'll be as smooth as ice.....

Wasn't able to really get out and about because of this lousy weather, but I did get my IAC and was able to replace it. So far it seems to have fixed the idle jump and I'll know for sure once I hit the town. Here's a few pics while I wait for the rest of the suspension. Picking up the Go-Pro tomorrow so plenty of pics and vids to come......

Yeah I get that a lot about the rims. They're actually S2000 rims which throw people off even more.

Re: 97 Toy!

So after first cleaning my old IAC and not having an issue for a couple days, my idle jump started going crazy and finally after replacing the valve I thought the problem was gone. Well after driving around town and getting it up to temp it began to idle jump and the only other parts I have replaced are the wires and IAC. I do have a small distributor leak and either than that I'm not sure what would cause it to jump like that. I'm going to read up and pin-point this phantom but if you've had this problem point me in the right part of the engine bay....... Thanks.

Re: 97 Toy!

Well sway bars from NOPI and bushings are still on their way and I will post before and after pics. Since my last post about the idle problem, it only happens once in awhile and the only code still flashing my engine light is the ABS so I guess all is running smooth. After suspension I will be looking into full internals and I am now leaning towards supercharger. I had planned on keeping it all motor but the boost bug is starting to bite....... About to get Froggy!!!

Try screwing in your FITV, might fix you idle issue. Also check your vacuum hoses for any cracks.

Re: 97 Toy!

^^ what he said plus triple check the coolant for air bubbles.

Mine used to bounce after warm up. Plugged cruise control hose back to the throttle body (DOH!) and it ran right after that.

Re: 97 Toy!

Thanks guys, definitely has improved over the last couple days. I'm leaning towards air bubbles and I think I just need to bleed out the rest. I will definitely go through all valves and hoses, clean and check on every thing because I've noticed when Honda's act up, it's usually something basic.....

Re: 97 Toy!

Changed out plugs today and only thing that is still not on point is a slight hesitation if I just try and cruise almost like it wants to bog down. Cap and Rotor will be replaced tomorrow since I have done the plugs and wires, I should have done them all together but oh well. Still waiting on suspension and I will post before and after pics then it's time to hit the turns.

The one I just got has the idle bounce also. If I can figure it out I'll cross post here. The fact that it went away when you replaced the AIC but came back has me puzzled.

Re: 97 Toy!

Yeah now it's a total phantom. I usually drive around town and when I stay local ( within 10-15 miles) it drives fine. As soon as I pull on my street or a couple other streets around town it goes crazy. Today I picked up my Cap from the store and after a 2 mile drive to the store it started jumping in the parking lot, when I pulled to the next light and again on my street. I haven't gone through it like I need to because of lousy Georgia weather last couple days, but I'm sure it's something little. If I hit the jackpot I will definitely pass it your way also, thanks......

Re: 97 Toy!

To be completely honest, you'll probably have better luck with OEM ignition components than you will with the MSD stuff. OEM distributor/cap/rotor, NGK wires and NGK Iridium plugs, tried and true.

^^^This. Listen to Noob Saibot.

Don't feed into the hype of "powergains" when MSD is referring to 900+hp nitro funny cars.
Honda uses elite shet right out the gate....

No fuel delivery or ignition timing components until you have a 400+hp beast. And even then , upgrade to acura parts, lol

Re: 97 Toy!

You lost me at iridium plugs. Best damn plugs I've ever used is the old plain ass ngk/denso. You don't need platinum, iridium or 4 grounds or any other snake oil. I understand why it could be needed and clocking still works bit i'm not seeing it here.

These are too easy to change plugs in and spark is too weak to be bothered about inert metals. Best thing you could do is keep corn out of it.

Yes, I was wrong in the other thread. I was trying to help by relaying to you information out of the FACTORY SERVICE MANUAL. How was I to know that the information in said manual was incorrect? I'm not trying to trash anything. I'm trying to pass along things that I've learned about these cars over the years, and hopefully save people time, money, and headaches.

Re: 97 Toy!

About the bolt...Honda didn't do everything 100% the same on every car. Why? Got me, but I've encountered a number of things my book says is this or that and my car had different. Axles, bolts, wires..I'm old too so I forget what else.

I got iridium ngk because they are more conistant. Regular is good though. But my local advance had iridium cheaper than regular and a coupon for a no cost ngk baseball hat.

Like sideswipe said, Hondas shipped with good stuff in them. But Ima pilfer some junkyard acuras real soon....

Re: 97 Toy!

NGK Iridiums are what Preludes came with from the factory. There is really no reason to dick with the ignition systems on these cars unless you're making a metric ****-ton of power (600+ HP).

Re: 97 Toy!

Well to each his own, I had full MSD on my Integra and was above and beyond better than stock ignition. When I upgrade a vehicle I hit all points of interest, Air, fuel, and spark. Since I have had good experience with MSD before, I plan on putting it under my hood. Now I don't look at something as simple as upgrading a cap, rotor and coil to include ngk plugs and wires, which is what I'm doing, into something with huge gains, just better spark. After this summer and into early next year I will have full head and most of the bottom end complete ready for supercharger. So again having a little more juice in the spark and of course fuel management, well sounds like a good idea to me. I understand Honda comes out of the gate with great gear, but yes I plan on pushing well over 300 by next year and I don't think a few extra bucks on a piece of equipment that I like will hurt.

Re: 97 Toy!

Look through some older build threads, and you'll find numerous instances of people building motors for F/I, who end up spending extra money on those MSD ignition components, only to have them fail. What do the guys do? End up switching back to OEM ignition components and solving a problem they never should've had in the first place. But yes, you're right, to each his own. I'm just trying to pass on things that I've learned over the years.
