Re: turn off out of no where???

Awe yeah, the ole ignition switch dilema.

Type your vin at honda world.com and it'll tell you if yours was swapped out.
There was a recall back in the day.

Re: turn off out of no where???

You should be able to call your local Honda dealership and give them your VIN and they will tell you whether or not yours was part of the recall. The recall went to 98-02 honda accords as well. I had two of them but only one qualified for the recall. So check with them and make sure that you give them your VIN correctly. If it qualifies it won't cost you anything. If it doesn't qualify then you can change it out yourself it's really not hard.

If you lean on Honda, they will probably replace a switch gone bad, even if it has already been done on recall. I have a '97, and I'm on my 3rd ignition switch.

I know for a fact its not going to be the switch it seems like its going to be the timing belt, cause its not firing and it only cranks

Re: turn off out of no where???

You could still be looking at an ignition switch...when mine did this in my accord it did the same thing..all the sudden the car just shut off, didn't matter what speed or how long I'd been driving. You could also possibly be looking at a crankshaft position sensor....but also check your distributor, the cap and rotor and the resistance of your coil..when a coil begins to break down, many times it will do it intermittently before it goes completely out..usually after the engine has been running for a while..but like all the parts in your engine bay..your coil is subject to high heat and heat is the enemy. Now if you are unsure of the last time that your timing belt was changed hey, change it along with your water pump and gaskets...it's good necessary maintenance..especially for an interference engine. You can check to see if your valve timing is off by performing a compression test on your engine.

Re: turn off out of no where???

Ignition switch is a easy 35.00 fix and little work to replace. Timing belt and Water pump and belts is a lot more expensive and time consuming. Diagnose the Ignition first if possible. Or just do a simple compression test. I'm in the middle of doing my timing belt this week and trust me it is a lot more work then you wanna do. But it is good maintenance that you will have to get to eventually

Re: turn off out of no where???

so i when to honda website and i did type my vin number and it has to recalls the ball joint and the switch but in the statues saids that it has been fixed.
so i call the tunning shop and they told me to check the volt on the starter and other thing that my hondata chip could of have been fried.
how can i test my hondata if it works and how can i check the volt on the starter and how can i see if the coil and the switch are bad?

Re: turn off out of no where???

Like I said, the ignition switch Honda put in my Prelude on their recall failed several years ago. Just because the switch has been replaced, does not mean it doesn't need it again.
I am on my 3rd ignition switch.
