Icon5 Just a few more questions...

Nothing pressing, if anyone has the time to share their experience...

I've put a a few posts about my recent purchase of a '99 auto lude...
I've changed all the fluids, addressed the few concerns I had for the moment...
I'm thinking of taking the car on a 500k roadtrip North where there is scattered cell reception and parts of the highway an hour from civilization... I've put about 600km's on the car since I got it and haven't had any breakdowns... it seems to be running great there are just a few things lingering that I'm wondering should be red flagged and looked at before taking off...
1. I read about the auto tranny failure... I do hear a slight whistle while accelerating up through the gears, it doesn't sound like a whine and isn't there in park or D with the brakes on...
2. The power steering doesn't have a lot of boost, I'm used to a newer GM, the steering in this car has more resistance than I'm used to, also it is sometimes harder to turn the wheels while stopped at idle, it comes back quickly as soon as you touch the gas...
3. I don't know for sure, but I don't think the timing belt or water pump have ever been replaced tho the car is responsive and idles very smooth, should I just get it done anyway?

Thnx so much for all the tips.. this is a great forum... hopefully I'll learn enough to contribute =)
Also wondering about the sunroof, it sometimes struggles a bit to open... but always does.. is there a certain lubrication I should use on it ?

Re: Just a few more questions...

ebay-parts are big NO!

they can fail anytime when quality is big ?-mark. just use oem parts. you want to keep your timing side as reliable as possible - if it fails youre looking to get new engine or one damn big rebuild

download car service manual. that helps you a lot and gives you an idea how big thing that is

Not for a beginner at all.. Don't know what "shade tree" mechanic or chain shops are.. Just take it to someone that knows Hondas and whose work you trust. To do the timing belt, they gotta take apart pretty much the whole engine, so do your pulleys (tensioners), water pump, vc gasket kit, and all belts while they're in there replacing stuff.

Just search "timing belt" on here and you'd be surprised how many posts there are. I did it on my 4th and I got a list of parts. Just go to Majestic Honda or some other Honda parts sourcing site and get what you need. If you want a list, just pm me. Then just get corresponding 5th gen parts.

Good luck.
