Size (length) of OEM cat?

I need to replace my cat to pass a Cali smog test. The universal version (weld on) is significantly cheaper than the direct fit version of the same model/executive order number. I figure I can just buy the universal version and have some flanges welded on and it will save me a ton of money.

The thing is, I'm pretty sure the dumbass car dealer who I bought the car from, just welded on some random cat that doesn't even go to my car. So I have nothing to base the size off of. I need to know the total over all length (from the end/outside edge of one flange to the other). That way when I have the flanges welded on the new cat, it will be the same exact overall length as the OEM cat.

Thanks.

Re: Size (length) of OEM cat?

I don't want an exhaust shop to do it for me. I want it to be the same dimensions, so that if it ends up being the case that I cannot pass a smog test with a cat-back system, I can simply and quickly unbolt it and bolt on the stock system.

The exhaust I want to get, which I posted in the other topic, is designed to fit to stock/OEM system, so if the cat is not same length, the cat-back system won't bolt up properly without modifying it. Or won't bolt up at all, without first welding the flanges on the cat, or spending over $400 to get the direct fit version with flanges already on. the universal version is only $155

why? its the most simple way to do it

universal cats come without flanges so you have to weld flanges there anyway so its not big deal to weld some pipe as well if necessary

I'm aware that universal cat's don't have flanges, and that I would need to get them welded on. But because my car currently has some random cat on there, there is nothing to base the size off of, which is why I need to know the exact length of the stock cat.

For example, lets say there was a 14" gap between the flange on the down pipe, and the flange on the long straight section of piping after the cat. That means that the cat with flanges, would have to be a total of 14" to bolt in there properly. The problem as I've said, is that the car doesn't currently have an OEM cat. So sure, an exhaust shop could put it on there and make it work but then when I go to bolt on the aftermarket cat-back system, it's not going to fit. If that makes any sense?

also, maybe this will help clear things up. There is no flange after the cat. The stock piping has been welded directly to outlet/back of the cat. On input/front of the cat, there is a flange that bolts to the flange of the OEM downpipe, however the spacing in between the inlet of the cat and the cat's front flange is almost certainly not correct either.

Here.. as you can see, it's a real hack job.
