Mysterious "Popping" Sound

So, my 5th gen Prelude has been driving pretty smoothly since I got a timing belt replacement, and there still don't seem to be many issues performance-wise. But, every once in a while, there is a strange "Popping" sound that happens. It feels more like a mechanical "pop" rather than a pop from combustion (from air intake or exhaust). I can also narrow it down to coming from in front of the passenger side seat about the same height as the bottom of the engine block and maybe a little bit higher. I can only think of three times that I have heard this sound. The first time, I just let it slide, then I heard it yesterday and now today. Yesterday when it happened, I believe I was at a dead stop and was pulling away from a stop sign when it happened. And today it was when I came out of reverse and first gear had just fully engaged. So it seems to be arising from something that is loose mechanically that is readjusting as I start moving forward. Its a fairly loud noise too. As if someone was under the floorboards knocking on the firewall. It is just 1 "Pop!" and then it stops. Not a continuous knocking or scraping. Just a one and done thing. Until it decides to do it again, that is.

Has anyone encountered this or have any idea what might be going on?

You should jack up your car on that side and inspect your suspension. Grab the wheel and twist it fore and aft to see if the wheel bearings wobble.
And check to ensure there's not a tear in the axle boots.

Are you sure there isn't something round under your passenger seat, like say a bottle of pop?

I'll check my suspension after I'm done with finals. And when I say "under the passenger seat," I meant in front of the firewall where the passenger's feet go.

This is happening to me right now. My front lower ball joints are crap. You might be having the same problem. or not but, does it happen when you press on the brakes hard? when i do this i hear a pop and i can even feel it. the pop i mean. it might not be it but good idea to check.

Re: Mysterious "Popping" Sound

Im glad im not the only one with the same problem as rawcarnage. I breifly looked over my balljoints and the joint where tie rod meets the knuckle is torn and has grease all over it. Gotta replace them bad boys.

Re: Mysterious "Popping" Sound

^^ my tie rods are @$%#@! up aswell. It was just about ready to get back on the roaid, but the damn steering wheel was clicking.
Oh and also, my damn brake booster check valve died... sigh, these cars are old and issues like these are expected.

ANYWAY

It could be the clutch, does it pop right after you completely engage it?

Might be a motor mount, but i think that's a bit of a stretch.
