Icon9 Dipstick has no lines...

The Dipstick in my '99 Prelude has to holes in it. No lines. when I got the oil changed, the oil came to the second dot. Today after 160miles it is between down between the two dots... ? How much exactly did I loose? Oh yeah. The check engine light came on, oh, yeah, there is oil pretty much all over the bottom of the engine. Oh wait, the guy at JiffyLube told me I might have a rear engine seal leak... Thoughts? Comments? I'm on a budget I thought I'd buy a Honda so I could look good AND save gas (and major auto repairs)... ? =0

Re: Dipstick has no lines...

rear main means you gotta pull the trans off. the dots are the full and add line. i think the lower dot is add 1 quart i think. as long as it's between the dots you're good.

Re: Dipstick has no lines...

Thanks... ...I parked in my underground parkade a few hours ago after having driven the car 40 miles... there was nothing on the concrete... also my check engine light comes on from time to time? hmm... and after waiting for the engine to cool there seemed to be a bit more oil... if the difference between dots is a quart I lost about half... I bought the car from an Asian lady who had never changed the plugs, tuned up or any other preventative maintenance. I changed the oil with 5w30 Mobil1. Tomorrow I'm going to wash the bottom the engine and see if I can't spot exactly where the oil is (was) coming from... a few other notes... when I take the oil cap off while it's running (Yeah yeah) there is quite a bit of air coming out... not smoke and no smell... Also I had a bro tail me while I was driving it to watch for blue smoke, there was none. I did a minor tune up, NGK wires, pre-gapped plugs, rotor... going to change the tranny oil tomorrow... I realize there's no specific question there but if you see anything missing or wrong that you can comment on please do... is there anything else I should do for the car? It's running ok... but again, VERY sure it had NOTHING done to it in terms of preventative maintenance, and was always run on 87oct (reg) gas... thnx for reading =)

Re: Dipstick has no lines...

You said in your first post the CEL came on? What code did it give you?

You will have to troubleshoot all your oil leaks, as it may not be just the rear main seal. I've had to replace every seal in my motor over the past year as stuff started to leak, but at least the motor is bone dry now.

If you have no idea of when the timing belt/waterpump/etc was done, it may be good to get that done as well (and replace every front seal you can, balance/crank/cams and the cam plug on the right side of the motor)

Use this link for troubleshooting the leaks. The Official Oil Leak Guide - Honda Prelude Forum : Honda Prelude Forums

Re: Dipstick has no lines...

Clean the bottom of the engine, and check again for leaks. If it's coming from in between the bell housing of the tranny and the block..... rear main seal, which like Hunter said, you gotta drop the tranny. Not fun.

Air is always going to come out the oil cap hole, as long as it isn't smoke, you're good.

Re: Dipstick has no lines...

... hmm good info... I sent the link to my sketchy mechanic dude. I read you're supposed to use premium, that lady most definately didn't, should I use one of those off the shelf injector/fuel system cleaners? thnx =)

True -- there are all sorts of places minor oil leaks come from, and just because airflow has blown it to the bottom of the engine doesn't mean that's where it started. Even if it does look like the rear main seal, unless you're bleeding quantities of oil into the bell housing (your oil-covered clutch will tell you), it's not something you need to jump on right away. And I wouldn't trust a Jiffy Lube "mechanic" to know the different between a rear main seal and a baby seal, let alone know which leaks oil. We had a guy at a local autocross a couple months ago spin a bearing...he'd had his local Jiffy Lube change the oil just the day before, but when we pulled out the dipstick, it was bone dry. (Yes, he should have checked, but you get my point....)

In the States, most chain auto parts stores, and many mechanics will plug a code reader into the car and dump your fault codes for free -- chances are they'll pick up some business. Don't know if the same is true in the GWN, but it's worth asking.
