Fuel Light?

Ok i've done a search but havn't got the answered i exactly wanted
Car - 5th gen 98
Basically all i wanna know is that is the fuel light meant 2 turn on when u turn ur car on, then the light turns off like the engine light etc. Because ive never ever seen it on even when the needle is virtually down at the bottom. I can drive until the needle is right at the bottom , and too scared 2 drive any further.
So basically i don't know if my light is not working or i havn't driven far enough for the light to turn on.
Is there a easy way 2 check for the fuel light ?
Are there any other signs of the tank getting empty?
Help appreciated.

the light won't turn on unless you are really close to being empty. usually you can run about 30 more miles, give or take a few, with the light on. i don't know if there is a way to check the light other than just runnin real low on fuel.

It'll come on when then fuel float in the tank dips and triggers the sensor...but don't experiment, just fill it up when you can. You get all the sediments and crap that comes up and clogs your fuel filter by always driving on empty...

...i know, i did it for months in my Civic...that's why i once achieved 43MPGs once going to Connecticut and back on near empty!

I wouldnt press my luck....not good to let it run out. When you get low on fuel take some corners and see if that triggers the sensor

my light seems to work fine, it comes on just before the needle hits E. When I fill up as soon as it comes on it only takes about 13 gallons, as far as I'm concerned I still have almost 3 gallons left

I'll tell ya, mine comes on when I get to the very bottom of my tank, but sometimes if it is getting down to the E line and I am sitting on a hill all the fuel goes to the back of the tank and then my light with turn on then off. But I have never actually let mine get all the way down. Just when it starts getting to that line get some fuel and I don't think I would really worry about it.
