Should I buy this car?

1998 Honda Prelude VTec black. 146k Miles. RUNS GREAT! negotiable.

I heard about the 97-98 Automatic Transmission problems here. Does anyone have any insight into how common that is?

Re: Should I buy this car?

If it comes with the phone on the front seat I would say buy it!! Anyways, from what I have read the automatic transmission is a common problem, but there are also things to do that will increase the life of it. Putting a cooler on the transmission and making sure that you don't take long trips in it will help to increase the life of the transmission. I believe Lazarky has had the auto for a while with no problems, but I think that it is babied as well.

*edit* This information is all an attempt to recall and convey. I am not responsible for any wrong information.

I do have an Auto. Not babied at all actually, i drive it daily and get on it every know and then. 212,813 miles and counting. im just letting you know now get the 5speed. easier and will save you money in the long run. i am eventually going to do the swap to 5 speed. but yes i have been fortunate with my auto tranny: knocks on wood:

Re: Should I buy this car?

Knowing the automatic will be a problem should make you aware that the transmission will require TONS of tlc, not using the triptronic feature ever, and religious upkeep of tranny fluid. If 5 speeds arent your thing, this car is right up your alley.

Just keep an eye out for prelude transmissions on ebay and if an auto with 60k shows up on the cheap, buy it. Problem solved. I'm for manual transmissions too, but realistically, its easier to knock off 1000$ the sale price and use that for an gently used transmission swap, when the time comes... If ever

The autotragic can be compared to marrying into herpes. Sooner or later it's gonna act up!

Re: Should I buy this car?

^^

If you have time to keep looking, there's a 5-speed out there for you..
If the tranny's original, I wouldn't buy it.. that's a lot of miles on an original ATT

^^ ex-zaktly!

Some do hold up well. There's a whole bunch of auto tranny 5g's in my area that run just fine. But they belong to folks who have the resources to fix 'em when they break.

If you are not one who has a access to $2-3 grand to throw away a moments notice...

then stay away from automatic 5g prelude.

Re: Should I buy this car?

I Have had my 98 for almost 10 years now. Yes it is an AUTO, and I have had no problems with it. There is one exception though. Make sure (if you get it) than when you have the transmission fluid flushed….TO USE GENUINE HONDA ATF !!! I had mine flushed and the bonehead mech did not listen to me when I told him HONDA ATF only, three days later, all the clutches inside were worn down to bare metal. Good thing, they paid to replace/rebuild it. And no I did not let them do it.

So with that said, and 212,000 and counting miles on mine, I have been happy with mine. Granted it's not as fun as a manuel, but I still enjoy it. Just take care of it, and it will take care of you.

Re: Should I buy this car?

It's very easy to do Mike if you know the issue exists, and you stay on top of the fluid intervals.

The PO, probably snaggs the car for 4-6k and drives it any old way. You can kill manual transmission synchros too, if you're careless and clutchless shift, cause you saw some RSX owner do it on youtube.
