Red 1997 SH repaint, what do?

I'm looking to repaint my 97 Honda Prelude (San Marino red stock, I think). I was planning on changing the color to white, but I figured this would take much more work to do it properly.

The San Marino red is okay looking, but I feel there are better paint codes if I'm going to repaint. I want to do something that isn't too flashy, but not too dark either. Maybe something with another color flaked in or undertoned. Any ideas? Has anyone repainted their Prelude a non-stock red and have photos?

Thanks in advance, I understand its a pretty general question but I'm just trying to see what options I have.

only downside to painting a different color completely, is having to do the door jams, and trunk jam, and the engine bay. None of that is mandatory obviously but nothing looks cheesier than red door jams and a white/black/blue body. Have you considered doing like a deep red with a sparkle type clear coat?

Re: Red 1997 SH repaint, what do?

Check out the movie 'harlem nights' sometime.
Besides being a hillarious movie, there are a number of scenes where you get a glimpse in the caddilac cars where there is contrasting door jams. The high $ cars in the 20's & 30's were done up from the factory with contrasting colors.

If you pick a good color the contrasting door jams, and engine bay may end up looking pretty cool.
You can have the inside of the hood and trunk painted also.

I knew a lady who had her gold car painted yellow. Looked stupid with gold door jams etc. She went for the $99 special.
Another fellow had his wifes silver cutlass painted a a custom shade of blue-ish silver, a bit darker. The door jams, engine bay and other not painted areas looked pretty dang cool compared to the new color. He wanted the contrast.

Say you do an electronic pearl blue... fail. But say a deep shade of red or perhaps white, take the doors, hod n trunk off and partially paint borders to match the outside, you may end up with something pretty cool.

I really like the idea of having contrasting door jams/etc. but I can't think of something I'd find all that tasteful.

I'm pretty set on changing the color now actually, I found a color that might be worth the extra work.

la8w/1k, its a Dark Grey used on VW GTI's MKVI, saw the color today and fell in love.

Now lets just speak hypothetically...

Lets say I did all of the prep/primer/base/clear on the exterior of the vehicle with the exception of the door jams/trunk (I don't care about the engine bay color). How much would a shop charge me to just do a pretty basic job on the door jams and trunk and other areas like such?

I figure I could do the majority of the work myself (exterior), and have a shop do the rest if its cheap enough.

In your guys experience, how much would a shop typically charge for a job like that? Basic job, remember. Nothing fancy for the door jams.

my cousin did the contrasting colors thing on his 88 cutlass. it turned out great as he's a master painter. There is no way I'd ever put a 10,000 paint job on any car though.

Re: Red 1997 SH repaint, what do?

^^ agreed. Especially on a car that minty tip top garage kept with 19 miles will get ya maybe... $12-13 grand? If a power ball ticket worth $80 mil fell in my lap I'd think about it...

Xmakeafist, check out the Ferdie build thread in the new member section. You'll get an idea of what it takes to do a total makeover of the cars color. It's quite a lot of work to paint door jambs, trunks, and that kinda stuff.

That vw color you speak of would look nice, and if you did some subtle stuff like say red keyhole ring, maybe a red pinstripe or that kinda miniscual accent on the outside of the car, your original colored door jambs etc would look like you paid extra for the contrasts.

D@m now you got me wanting to paint my black car white.

Re: Red 1997 SH repaint, what do?

I am going to do that as well. My car started as Milano Red, and then I had it painted like you see in my SIG. Well I am too the point where I need to show some TLC so I am going to replace the fenders and front bumper and headlights. After that is all finished, instead of painting my car. I am going to plasti-dip it white and put either a pearl or metallic over it. Only going to be $600-$700 for the whole car.

Its really funny you mention that. I was planning on doing the repaint (as you guys have seen) and NOW I'm planning to do the white with pearl/gloss, can you do both gloss/pearlizer by the way?

I see a guy locally that dips the door jams, gloss, and prep for 350 dollars, he pays for the dip.

At this point saving the money and avoiding the labor all seems really worth it for something I desire a little bit less.

Anybody have experience in seeing a car that is dipped completely white with pearl/gloss? I figure white is the color you'd be able to tell the absolute least that its dipped. I'm really excited to get it done for so cheap.

I'd just like to know the possible issues of dipping the entire car. I've never left a car in the hands of another person, so I'm also wondering what else I should look out for.

Thanks for the feedback! Kinda cool that somebody is almost doing the exact same thing I am. Let me know how it goes for you, I'd like to hear somebody else's input before I waste 350.

Re: Red 1997 SH repaint, what do?

Hey guys, just doing a quick update. Ended up doing all of the prep work for my car and had somebody else paint it. I stuck with the VW color mentioned before. For the most part I like how it turned out! Some parts are kind of ****ty because apparently the paint I ordered came wayyyy too reduced, so it came out kind of thin. Otherwise, I love the color! Still needs plenty of work though. Next move is to lower it, and make it so the seals look less ****ty. Oh and the hood/trunk is dipped a flat black. Rust on them was pretty bad so I figured I'd just dip them until I have the money for a nice rust free hood/trunk. It actually looks nice dipped.

You're not the first person to tell me that! ahaha. I've wanted to do purple wheels with a vibrant flake to it, and do the same color with the engine bay. Literally my friend has been nagging me for the longest time to do it.

Sadly I'm no longer working and in college, so I don't even have the car up here with me at the dorm
