Gas Gauge mod help

So I've looked around and can't find anything close to what I'm looking to do. Haven't checked other 5th gens but I'm sure they are the same but on mine the gas gauge shows the amount of gas at all times even without the key in the ignition, but in other cars the gas gauge only shows the amount once the key is engaged and goes away once you take the key out. For some ppl they don't mind that feature but for me and the point of view I'm looking at it, if a car thief or joy rider is looking around in a parking lot for his next mark (peaks in to see what he can make money on doesn't see much but sees a full tank, now if I was in that business not saying I am have been or will be but I want to protect myself as best as possible, I would take the car with some good items and a full tank because I can make use of all of it. Now has anybody ever done a mod to the oem gauges so the gas gauge only engages when the ignition is on ? Now I know if i do an S2k cluster swap I won't have to worry about it but don't have 500 bucks to drop on it as much as I would love to, so im sticking with oem for now, I do have a Viper alarm with a 2-way pager if that makes a difference but if anyone has info or experience with this type of mod let me know thanks

All 5th gens show the amount of gas you have whether the key is in the ignition or not.
Cheap mod, tape a picture of your girlfriend in that area, problem solved.
Or cover it up when you get out of the car or when it's parked.

Yea that's probably the cheapest route I could go but wouldn't mind spending 20-30 bucks for parts and relays if I find out its possible but hey a fix is a fix lol

Re: Gas Gauge mod help

I may be wrong here, but at the speed the needle climbs from an empty tank to a full tank after fill up, I doubt it would be worth it. Mine can take a few minutes to fully climb.

How about just installing a fuel kill switch/toggle switch to the fuel pump?
that would be simple, just have to find the wire schematics.

Re: Gas Gauge mod help

No you are right they do take their sweet time doing it but so do other cars that have the feature, I just hope I don't need to modify a gas floater or anything inside the tank to do it.

Re: Gas Gauge mod help

I noticed that when I first acquired a 5th gen and for the same reason you cited oneshot. But because my car is for joy riding, never considered a mod.

As for the gauge climbing slow... if you had a half tank before you parked it, chances are good you still have a half tank when you go to drive it again so no biggie if the gauge is slow imo.

I'll research compatability of other Honda cars and see if it's a practical thing to do using junkyard parts... maybe from other manufacturers as well.

Re: Gas Gauge mod help

Yea the slowness that Noober mentioned is only after you fill up which I've noticed and never bothered me I mean the only way around that falls back on the s2k cluster because its all digital at least I'm assuming the reading will be almost instant because half the work for that mod is converting everything to digital ? I'll look to see what other hondas have that I'm sure their has to be something out there. The last thing I ordered was the Accord trunk popper that is a direct bolt up to the 5th gen ludes except the wiring so their is hope lol

Re: Gas Gauge mod help

I was thinking in terms of why some stay at fuel level and others drop to empty. That and why the Honda prelude fuel gauge takes so dang long to move. My 3g cars used to rise slowly, although not as slow as my 5g does.

If you don't mind digital go to hondapartsnow and enter the s2k car, then find the gauge part #. Type said # in the search bar and see if perhaps there are other Hondas that use it. If so maybe those cars are available at junkyards. Also check the part # on the acura portion of hondapartsnow.com.

honestly if a thief is gonna take a car then usually they look for something they know they can get not the amount of gas it got. not worth the time to wire it

Re: Gas Gauge mod help

Thank you hunter, that was what I was implying. It is a concern to have the car stolen for joyriding, but you need to worry about the contents of the car itself. including radios, amps, laptops, and the interior itself.

The fact remains, fuel cannot be spent, nor the car moved if you disable the ignition system. Why spend real money so that your fuel gauge doesn't give a reading.

....also you could always just put enough gas in the prelude so it's always just above "E".

Re: Gas Gauge mod help

My searches of why or why not it moves ended up causing me to be more confused.
Frankly I kinda forgot about it after reading it's a resistance thing in the float in the tank itself that causes the needle to rise/fall. And I didn't find a definitive answer as the why some gauges can move to 'e' when turning off the car and others remain where they were.

My Ford ranger gauge falls to a quarter tank. If I have about that much it falls to 'e'.

Re: Gas Gauge mod help

Appreciate all the insight, I know everyone is going to have different views on this since everybody lives in different places and crime rate is different but even though I keep everything out of sight when I'm not inside my lude isn't really the issue as its a habit you pick up but ppl will steal a car for a lot less and clearly knowing their is a full tank, even with an alarm it won't stop them from trying to take the car for a joy ride. Hence what I want to avoid altogether.

Pft, I aint worried about 'em stealing my pos car. Besides I have great insurance.
My car sits a lot so I don't wanna be known as old faithful the free gas guy by local hoodlums with scooters. Know what I mean?

You've re-piqued my interest oneshot.

If the info is correct this is a 99 Accord with the gas gauge cut off is what ill call it, ill look into the wiring for both cars and see if its something simple, crossing my fingers.

Not a bad idea dizzlgmore, until **** hits the fan and I have less than a 1/4 tank :( no bueno, yes they could Hunter but why would they go through all that trouble if they don't know how much gas is in the car ? Going to be taking my voltmeter to the cluster harness see if I can wire up a relay or something to the ignition tomorrow if possible.

Re: Gas Gauge mod help

Maybe because i'm from new york, but stealing a car on e wont stop anybody. E is still 14-18 miles of fuel left and more than enough to joy ride and rob those mini atm machines.

Stant does make fuel caps with locks and the spring that keeps siphoners at bay.
If you truly wanna be ocd, pull the needle off the gauge.

Cmon now....
