Overheating issue.

In the past month my 5th gen has overheated twice. the first time it was a really hot day out in so cal so i was running my a/c full blast. temp gauge began to rise to about 3/4 so i quickly turned the heater full blast and it rapidly went back to the normal half way temp. Today on my way home from school it did it again. except today i was on the highway doing about 80mph when my car began to lose power (speed) all on its own.Maybe it slowed it down in order to protect it from overheating?. i went from 80 to 60 in a matter of seconds. i pressed the gas pedal all the way down to see if it would pick up but it didn't (unaware it was overheating) that's when i looked at my temp gauge and once again it was over heating so i followed the same process of the heater and again it quickly dropped down. also iv'e been hearing some weird humming noise in the engine during idle. it goes away when i rev it to about 2k. what are some things which may be causing it to overheat. based on the research iv'e done(yes i research lol)main things that pop up are
-bad thermostat
-fans not engaging "in time"
-radiator crapping out
-water pump
-air in my cooling system?
coolant level is topped off, oil is a week old so any knowledge you guys may have that can help me out would be greatly appreciated! Thanks PZ!
