Icon5 gas gauge probs

I have a 1998 prelude and the gas gauge has been reading wrong since i first bought it. when i fill the tank up the gauge will point to full and as i drive throughout the week it will go up a little and down a little in a descending form. but once it gets to about a quarter of a tank it goes straight to E. its all around just hard to read unless i fill my tank every day. ive heard that there would be two different problems here, either my actually gauge is broke or the bobber in the tank. but instead of bringing it to a shop and getting ripped off. Does anyone know an easy way to determine which one could be the problem? or a link to a forum that already answered it would be just fine.
Also i need a good tutorial on how to fix either problem to, im sure it cant be too hard to fix it myself.
thank you

Re: gas gauge probs

Go to the diy section and download a service manual. It'll tell you how to trouble shoot it.

Pretty much got flamed for driving like a jackass and was told to slow down. And I'll be damned, slowing down fixed it.

Re: gas gauge probs

^^^

Or, if you're lazy, fill it up and reset your trip to 000.0, take an extra gallon in the trunk, and drive til it runs out. Then you'll know exactly how far you can go.

To answer your question though, I do not know how to troubleshoot the different components without taking stuff apart, so DL the service manual like Byk said.
