5th Gen Honda Prelude Auto Shifter not working

Good evening all,

I have recently been restoring my Prelude to a hopefully clean and maintenance sound condition. With intentions of stripping the interior down to proof the floor and rid it of some rustic points, I removed the shifter (auto) to clean it down as well and regrease. Before I was able to put the key in the ignition and turn only to shift from park to neutral in order to remove the center console, now it's time to put the center console back, and the shifter won't budge from park position, any idea what I could have done wrong? Everything seems to be in place and wires are plugged back into their respective connecting units, no leftover bolts or screws, what could be the problem?

not to be a smart a$$ but...when you tried to move from the park position, did you turn the key?

Sorry forgot to include that, yes I did have the key out of lock position so that the shifter was free to engage

Key has to be in the ignition and turned on in order to move the shifter, or put the key in that little slot to the side to manually unlock the shifter

I can't think of anything except that, its not letting you shift because the transmission isn't letting you.

i.e. that cable from the shifter to the transmission is stuck...so the problem is either coming from the shifter or the transmission...i'm assuming its more from the shifter.

Just K.I.S.S. for now, take apart and reassemble man...maybe the wiring is dirty and its not sending a signal properly to the TCU or the transmission to say...hey i'm trying to get out of park...lol

good luck

Ok I'm pretty sure I know how to put the key in the ignition, turn it, and step on the brake to engage the shifter, it was not moving before. I removed the shifter and readjusted some components, my new problem however is that the vehicle starts, however upon shifting from neutral or park to drive, the vehicle stalls and cuts off. Perhaps the auto shift linkage, how would I fix that?

It could also be your solenoids on the transmission. You should have two of them but it could also be your torque converter causing it to stall on idle.
Use the troubleshooting guide. I found it very useful to find out the culprit...my scenario being that i had to replace my entire transmission.

Re: 5th Gen Honda Prelude Auto Shifter not working

Thanks for your particular response, it was actually a matter of removing the grounds from both sides of the car right around the general headlight area, as well as the one connected to the head, cleaned them up for better contact with the metal and just sprayed some lithium grease on there and she started right up, shifted just fine. Who would have thought that was the solution?
