weird exhaust sound

So I have an aftermarket exhaust, which sounds amazing. But sometimes Ive noticed if i coast in neutral for about 100 ft or so (down a hill) then put her back in gear my exhaust sounds awful, a garbled deep sound takes over for a bit. Once I push threw it around 4 rpm it resumes its sweet sound. Just wondering if i should be worried about this noise??

Re: weird exhaust sound

You might want to give people some time to get off of work before giving up on getting a response.

I would love to help, but I have no clue what would cause that.

Re: weird exhaust sound

There is no popping, its pretty scary when i hear it. Its like the sound is being amplified much louder then usual. Come to think of it, it sometimes happens when Im stopped at a light for awhile when its really cold out too.

Re: weird exhaust sound

I'm experiencing a similar noise...when i'm in 1st or 2nd i hear it from my exhaust like its vibrating against metal or grinding against it...i went to inspect one weekend and found nothing wrong...i still get the noise but i don't notice anything changing as far as driveability or steering...maybe your exhaust just vibrates against a rear panel somehow...is it flush with anything?

Re: weird exhaust sound

Hell, it could even just be the 'heat shield' over top of the exhaust under your car rattling against it. Mine did that for a while when I swapped my exhaust system over.

Re: weird exhaust sound

If you could get a video we could diagnose it a little more. To me it sounds kinda like you're having a little after-fire (most people call it back-fire, but back-fire happens in the intake not the exhaust)

After-fire isn't much to worry about almost every car with a free-er flowing, larger diameter, exhaust will get the after-fire popping. Sounds especially great on v motors. I love it on my Mazda 6

Now if it's a buzz sound, when does it happen, only in decel? And do you have a vtec motor or non-vtec?

Here's a video of my headers and custom 3" flowmaster ehaust on my v6 Mazda 6, is it a buzz like what mine get's in this video?

I have a greddy 3" no cat back. But it does sound like its coming from the front of the car more than the rear, like it could be the intake. You say its nothing to worry about, what causes it? I do have a vtec. Its on acceleration when it only happens. It doesnt buzz, I wish i could get a video, but its so random it would be almost impossible to get it on video of it when it happens.
