Just bought a 1997 Prelude SH, possible issues.

Hey guys. Fairly new to working with cars, and the Prelude in general. So bare with me.

Just bought a 97 Prelude SH, 186k, has plenty of maintenance records of oil changes, timing belt changes, clutch, etc. It was well taken care of mechanically (needs cosmetic work). Completely stock besides some carbon fiber trim on the inside and fogs on the front (owned by a chick since 88k).

I've noticed two things that have kind of bothered me since owning the car (3 days ago). Whenever I accelerate I notice a grinding/shaking kind of sound as I accelerate. It doesn't sound like its coming from the wheels. I'm thinking this is possibly an exhaust leak? I notice it most in the lower gears.

Another thing (which is kind of an embarrassing story). Yesterday night a super clean white 5th gen Prelude revved at me twice as he was passing the parking lot I was waiting in, so in idle I gave it two pumps too (only up to 3k, no big deal). Immediately after my car started kind of shaking, not violently but enough to be concerned. The RPM's got fairly low and felt like it was going to die, but it didn't. Could this be a big issue?

Thanks in advance, sorry if I'm not using terminology properly. As I said i'm fairly new to this kind of forum and auto diagnosis/modification.

Your probably right, the Grinding/shaking is probably from your exhaust, preferably the honeycomb looking thing in the cat and if not the cat, its the downpipe area from the exhaust manifold. It has some kind of metal in it, Hard to explain but at a specific RPM range it causes a perfect resonance to vibrate that piece... weird.

I'm interested in the Rev issue too, i have the same problem almost.

im not sure on the rev issue, but wouldnt it have something to do with the IACV? give it a good cleaning and see what happens. Look it up and you might find that that is your problem

Thanks for the help guys! I looked through most of the sticky's and didn't manage to find that idle problem page. I feel like an idiot now, hah.

Anyway, I'm going to work on doing some maintenance to the Prelude (brake fluid flush, replace spark plugs/wires etc.) I took it to the oil change place and they said its leaking transmission fluid, but I never see any sitting on my driveway? They also said its leaking oil, which I would imagine is probably from the exhaust manifold due to the noise? Is this a possibility? (once again I'm really new to all of this, so bare with me)

Thanks for the help everyone!

The oil issue is probably from Vtec Solenoid or Cam Cap seals, those two are the biggest culprits, that and H22s are always eating or leaking oil :) Part of the lifestyle haha

I'll be sure to check those things when I start on the regular maintenance. It's good to know its a common issue and probably not something too terrible. What is the function of the V-TEC solenoid? How hard would the replacement be of both of these possible culprits? Is it expensive?

Thanks again guys! Always helpful.
