It's for the better anyway. The auto tranny woulda crapped out on you in no time, giving you an exponential amount of anxiety.

Wait for a 5 speed

Second! Get a 5-speed. My friend had an auto and he had to replace the tranny twice.

Re: Prelude Anxiety...

Besides the reliability aspect of the manual transmission, I have to tell you that driving an automatic 5th gen is pretty weak. I should know, I used to own one. I bought it to convert to manual, but it got mercifully wrecked.

Yeah an auto easy for cruising around, and looking nice, but if you want to experience what the Prelude was built for, you really need to get a manual. Some would argue that you can play around with the "sport shift" mode, but it just isn't the same. The gearing is all wrong. I would say that the automatic is more of the "accessible" model, geared towards people who want the sporty look but who can't drive stick. Sorta like Honda for the sake of sales said "okay... you guys can play too.."

Mechanically, they are a headache, performance-wise they are like a Shirley Temple, and, they tend to make male owners look kinda chickish. Unless you're missing a limb, I'd highly recommend a manual.

I would say that even without a limb, you should attempt to have a manual transmission. Just might have to rig it up. People on the corners might have to watch out more carefully though.

Re: Prelude Anxiety...

I have an auto. It's probably breaking as you read this ha.

The crappy thing is that from what I've read you can't even get an aftermarket rebuild kit to make it last. The problem is the metal that the gears are made of themselves. They heat up and expand and mess up the gear tolerances.

Also I wouldn't be too mad at honda for these trans being bad, I don't see the auto trans as a middle ground for auto to manual. These were some of Hondas first triptronic trans ever made, the prelude was used as a platform to try new technology. New technology is never the best the first time it comes out.

ALL 5TH GEN AUTO TRANS ARE JUNK AND WILL ALWAYS BREAK.

Re: Prelude Anxiety...

Two companies rebuilt them for Honda. Pheonix and Howard. When Honda needed a good one for warranty work, they used them. If the customer was paying... they got a new (as in another pos) Honda unit.

The Howard is supposedly pretty good, if you don't mind $3500 + s&h... 50k mile or 50 month warranty.

I've also read there's a guy in South Carolina who replaces the internal filter with an external one when he rebuilds them.
I say all this because I hope to have an auto 5th someday. Research has shown if you have enough $ you can have a reliable auto tranny in a 5th gen... if I ever win the big lottery....

Re: Prelude Anxiety...

The problems aren't even isolated to prelude tranny's; it's all Honda's are known for weak auto tranny's.

6th gen accords/2nd gen TL's (all same year's as 5G preludes) ALLL have problematic auto tranny's. My '00 TL, at 136K miles, is just starting to show signs of a bad tranny

Re: Prelude Anxiety...

^^ Yep... dam shame!!!!

I've been picking parts from real nice accords and acura cars in junkyards for a couple of years now. Most are auto tranny. It's amazing how many clips, keepers, ashtrays and other little things from our cars are still being used on high $ honda and acura vehicles.

Quality Transmissions
