Engine buying Help

Hey guys I have a 1997 SH. the motor that came with was an H22a. The block was bad so looking into buying a "new" one. Was on the phone with mechanic he said since it is SH the only motor is the h22a type S. I just wanted to check with you guys in regards to that since I have not dealt with this mechanic before, but was referred by other people I know. He said that there is a small notch on the transmission side that allows for the type S motor to fit in and no other h22a will fit without that notch, just wanted to check you guys before going foward with it. Fast response would be great thank you.

Re: Engine buying Help

every "H" engine is pretty much plug and play in the SH in the terms of mounts. that "Notch" he may be taking about (I don't know what he is taking about) is probably for the ATTS. the type S engine is basically a modified H22a4 that gets and extra 20 horses. you can take a stock SH, take out the ATTS, get a base axle, and your good to go (like how it is set up now). Vice versa, you can take put a h23 in there and not have atts, an h22a4 with or without atts (different transmissions as too) or if you want more power and spend more money, the type S.
if you want it back to stock, it will be the H22a4, with ATTS.

Re: Engine buying Help

Ok so from what you have said. Sorry if I repeat stuff just I have a difficult time learning stuff unless I map it out for easy understanding.

My block H22a with S/N 1002266
The Vin # is SH
The car is OBD1 with a civic ecu i believe. Not 100% on the numbers
I am double checking here in about 30 minutes whether it has the ATTS block on the transmission itself.

I am about 80% sure it does have that large block that sits on top of the transmission (being the ATTS) Both me and the mechanic are surprised at the setup in the car currently.

Re: Engine buying Help

The atts is attached to the usdm driver side of the differential.
If the atts is still there your mechanic is correct.

If you do not have the atts, but have the 'delete kit' an Si-R block will do.
If you still have the atts then you'll either need the type s block, or have to do an atts delete.

Re: Engine buying Help

What is the code on your transmission? Thats really the easiest way to see what is compatible. If its M2U4 then you still have the sh trans

Re: Engine buying Help

I sent him some pictures and he said i do not have ATTS. Which is kinda of wierd since I have an SH so the person before me did something rather different with the motor or was not 100% sure what he was doing. Idk.

The good news is that the full swap will be cheaper without the ATTS and since I have never had it I don't know what I am going to be missing lol.

I have not googled where to find the tranny s/n yet, will have to look it up. I appreciate the help with the matter at hand as it made it much less confusing for myself.

Re: Engine buying Help

We're here to help!

The thing about the transmission is that it will have a white label near where it mates to the engine in the front. Not every h22a4 engine belongs to an sh car but every m2u4 belongs to an sh. So that's why its sometimes easier to go by that. When you said you were running obd1 I knew that you wouldn't have the atts function with that and someone had probably swapped you to a base. Congrats on another step closer to getting your car back on the road man, keep us posted

Re: Engine buying Help

Well after giving all the info to the mechanic he said he will start looking around through his providers. however he has yet to come up with anything in about 2 weeks. So was curious if I could lean on you guys for some more help. I have check out a few places, but not 100% sure if they are what I am truly looking for.

Found this but not 100% sure. http://www.tokyomotorimports.com/eng...ION%20ECU.html

Re: Engine buying Help

^^ these folks

We got a motor from them in like 8 days. S&H was about $200 from Canada to the middle of the east coast of the U.S.
And the R&L driver forked it to our garage.

Re: Engine buying Help

Well i coudl probably get away without replacing the tranny, but every time I have heard of people replacing motors the first thing to go bad is something within the tranny, plus my current trans has a stage 3 clutch on.

Also wanted to add this. He plans to buy just a motor from Hmotors. So I believe I will just look for a motor only. He has also had hit and miss engines from tiger.

So I have done some research Tiger has a BBB rating of F..with 21 complaints about products/services. Hmotors is BBB accredited, but not rated with 0 complaints. ToronotaJDM.com has a rating of B with 2 complaints in 3 years. MOre info below what do you guys think or do you have other companies i should look into.

Prices Arrival
-Tiger 799+shipping 3-7 days
-TorontoJDM 900+shipping 3-5 days
-Hmotors 1199+shipping April 1st-7th

Final Edit--After talking it over with a few people decided to order from Hmotors, even though the wait will be long I have already waited a while and no point in rushing when the product is not what I want. So hopefully I am paying for some quality.
