Looking at an '01 >>

So, it's one of those threads! I was hear a few years ago when I was looking at a prelude, and I just happened to find one in the new town I moved to recently, so checked it out tonight.

Few things: It's an automatic. I know, I know, but the wife will have to drive this car at times, and she refuses to learn manual. Frankly, I'm also afraid of her rolling back into someone or something.

The first problem that I noticed, and the guy told me, is that when you first start it up it will die unless you give it some throttle. Not so much after a few seconds. It was pretty much out of gas, so he threw some in it (regular unleaded most likely) and I was ready to take it for a test drive. If I didn't give it any gas when I put it into reverse it would die. I let it warm up for about 2 minutes, and it did better. After taking it out on the highway, only hit about 75 but I wanted to show the wife the vtech kicking in, not that she cared, I went back to the shop and let it idle for about 5 minutes. It didn't die, so I figured it's a warm-up thing. The guy said he thinks it may be an idle control motor?

As far as the drive... well it's an automatic, but it's still a prelude. He said it was 215hp, but I thought the base had 200. Oh well. It's the H22A4 motor. It seemed to me like it shifted nicely, smooth for the most part and no hesitations or hard shifts that I noticed.

It has 110,xxx miles on it, and he's asking 2800. Oh, one of the things, it has a salvage title I found out when I ran an autocheck report, from an accident back in 2007, and it's been with one owner since then. It was sent to auction in january, and this guy got it from his dealership friend before it sold.

I'm going to include pictures!

Ok, so i tried to include pictures, but they are either too big, or something else is keeping me from adding them. I know it's a pain, but I just threw them on flikr.

Any advice? Other than 5spd is better... happy wife, etc. Thanks!

Re: Looking at an '01 >>

Read the 5th gen auto tranny failure thread. Then decide if you want to take a chance... on the automatic.

Me personally, I'm a huge fan of high performance cars with automatic transmissions. Luxury hot rods if you will. But between my son and I we've had 6 preludes from 3rd to 5th gen and none have been a 5th with auto because those transmissions are horrible. HORRIBLE!!!

Do some research on the auto tranny for the accord and the prelude. What goes wrong. What it takes to fix them and how much it'll cost. If you can chance putting out dough at a moments notice or can have a remanufactured one installed now, sure go for it.

Re: Looking at an '01 >>

i agree w/ bykfixer, be careful w/ the transmission on the 5th gen auto's. I had alot of trouble w/ my 5th gen and eventually swapped it to a manual.

Re: Looking at an '01 >>

The base came with 200, but so did the type sh. The only prelude that came with >200bhp was the Type S or the SiR S Spec, both which had 220bhp. Idk where this guy got 215 from. That price is pretty good. How does the paint look? Check the suspension and make sure that nothing is cracked or broken. The auto transmissions are notorious for failure though... You really should get your wife on that ;)

Most people who can't drive standard have never tried and don't understand how easy it really is and how much more "attached" to the control of the car you feel.

Re: Looking at an '01 >>

to me it looks like the valve cover is leaking and the distributor cap is leaking oil, could b a easy fix but I wouldn't go for it. too many auto failures to drop coin on a auto lude. good luck on ur search.

I pulled the dip stick and the oil looked almost clear, like it'd just been changed but I'll ask him.

Re: Looking at an '01 >>

Ok, so my wife prevailed, and we are now the proud owners of a 2001 Honda Prelude.

I drove it from the guys place to where we were doing the paperwork and the check engine light came on. He did a diagnostic and it showed codes for being to rich on bank 1. I filled it up with premium and it seemed to idle better on the way home, as well as added a fuel injector cleaner.

He said that the timing belt was changed because it blew at the dealership. Also, he put new solenoids on the transmission he said, though the old ones weren't in bad shape. (the guy seemed to make a hobby of breaking down and rebuilding cars. He had some kind of saturn he was driving, then several integra/hondas in his shop.)

So... I guess we'll see how it goes from here. Since my wife was adamant on the automatic, I told her that if it goes out we're going to manual. She said she could live with that, lol.

Thanks again guys, look forward to pestering all of you more in the future!

Oh, and he said that whoever had it before laid new pipe and that it had plenty... what does that mean?

OH! And the dumbest question that I can ask, but that I have to know. So on the gear box there are the normal park/nuetral/reverse. Then there's drive 4,3,2,1. I know you can do the sport shifting, but I also know that it stresses out an already shaky transmission, so I'd rather not. Which D should I be driving in for just normal driving? I assume D4, as it's the closest to normal, but I don't like assuming things. I searched, but people just talk about sportshifting or not.

D4 and let the TCM do the rest.
Usually when I'm driving mine, being moderate on the throttle, car changes gears between 2400-2900rpm.

Thanks man! I'm taking it in to the shop this morning to hopefully get my idling problem sorted out. Just hope that's the only problem, and that it's an easy-ish fix.

Here's a picture of the car! She's at the doctor right now. If she doesn't get well my wife will owe me for a long time.

Re: Looking at an '01 >>

Anytime the wife approves the purchase of a Prelude is a good time.

Have no idea what 'laid new pipe, plenty of it' means in terms of an automobile, unless he's speaking of all new hoses.

Good luck.

Re: Looking at an '01 >>

Congrats on the purchase, nice pic. I just bought a '97 base with auto also, 53k mileage, paid 6k for it. I'm also rolling the dice with that tranny also. So far, so good. As far as the sport shift goes, give it a try. I find it to shift smoother than the auto. I shift at @ 2500 rpms & I don't abuse it. I let it downshift on its own. There's a good thread in the 5th generation section that details what to watch out for regarding the failure of the auto tranny. I found some good overall info about the vehicle also through the owners manual available on-line. Keep using premium gas & good luck with it !

Grats on the prelude!

Just wondering, but where did you happen to find the manual at? I've been looking, but haven't had any luck.
