Icon5 Bad master fuse box? Car dies randomly plz help!

Hey guys Iv searched the threads and can't seem to find the problem I'm having so if this has been talked about before I apologize in advance. Here's the deal, while driving my car the other day everything suddenly died except for the stereo and headlights meaning all my gauges dropped to zero. I pulled over and the car started right back up again. Now, this happened to me back in December but I took it to this mechanic who said it was the master fuse box. He replaced it I guess (charged $300) and after that everything was fine until two days ago. I'm not a mechanic but I could take care of the problem myself if I could just get pointed in the right direction as to what this is. I drive 2 hours every day to get to school (one way) and I can't have this s*** happening when I'm going 65+ mph on the highway. This problem happens randomly too, it doesn't seem to matter if the car is hot or cold. Please help me out. Is there a short somewhere? If there is how can I check this? Or is the master fuse box going bad again? Or is my computer going bad? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Car dies randomly plz help

It sounds like a bad ignition switch. There was a recall for this, you can check to see if it was done by calling a Honda dealership and providing your vin#. Mine was done in 2001 or 2002 by previous owner but I ended up having to replace it again around 2007 IIRC. **So they can go bad again.

The part is cheap and I've heard it's easy to replace (you can probably search for instructions).

Re: Car dies randomly plz help

Thanks for the response, is there anything else that could cause this or would this be the main problem?

That would be the place to start. This TSB is the response to the NHSTA recall 02v120000. You could probably replace the ignition switch yourself, but for this particular recall, the dealer should do it for you, if it hasn't already been done...any Honda dealer should be able to look up the record.

Called Honda this morning and the ignition switch was done with the previous owner. Also, if there was a bad ground causing this how would I go about finding it? If there's a link to another thread on finding bad grounds please share, I'll be doing some searching between exams. Thanks for the replies.

What you're describing is a well known issue for 5th gens. As I previously stated, this happened to me even though the previous owner had it done. They CAN go bad again. When I did the replacement I chose to go with an aftermarket brand as I lost faith in that particular Honda part.

Did they say when your recall was done?

Instead of chasing ghosts I would highly suggest you re-replace the ignition switch just to cancel that out. It should be easy to do. Driving your car knowing it can be unplugged from the Matrix at any time isn't fun, trust me I know. Start with the ignition switch.

Re: Car dies randomly plz help

The part was replaced in '03 so it's been a while. I'm going to find an aftermarket replacement. There's no point in replacing with another genuin Honda part if they are crappy to begin with. Where did you get the replacement from?

I can't recall but it was whatever AutoZone had on hand.

Re: Car dies randomly plz help

My brothers 4th gen was doing this. it happened to me all 3 times. (always when at a red light) better said at a stop. what we did was replaced the main relay, fuel pump, distributor, and fuel filter. seemed to be a combination of all of them going bad. after we replaced all that it stopped doing it, so you might wanna check those out. not sure if thats the case for you but, just giving some input from personal experience.

Thanks HondaBB6 for your input. Main relay was replaced over new years so i hope it's not that again (it was replaced BECAUSE of this issue) I'll have to look into the other things you mentioned. I took it to a shop to get an opinion but all they said was there is definitely a short but couldn't locate it. I guess I'll replace the ignition switch first just to rule that out.

Re: Car dies randomly plz help

Unfortunately sometimes you just have to hire a pro.
Ask around. People you know can tell you who is worth going to and who to avoid.
A good shop wouldn't just say 'you have a short' and send you on your way.
The good mechanics I've met over the years would not be satisfied until they had found the short.
My mechanic would start with what goes wrong with these cars typically. Service bulletins. He would probably start with the known issue... the ignition switch.

When things continue to go wrong or you just can't figure it out, the pro mechanic is worth every dime. Anything electrical either requires you to posess lots of know how, or know someone who does.

It's not 'un-manly' to be stumped and admit you need help. And a good mechanic will gladly show you how to fix things for yourself in the future. Especially the a-typical stuff that the forums can't solve.

Many times in life we tend to waste a lot of time and $ trying to figure out what a pro could solve in 30 minutes.
I spent hours and hours trying to figure out a non working fans dilema not long ago. I did everything I knew how to do. I tried every suggestion from a multitude of forums and friends. Nothing.

So I took it to the best diagnostician in my area. A guy who was fixing cars the year I was born. He too was stumped for a while. But one day the bio-rythms synched up and the combination of issues all cooperated.
It was liberating to see the expert stumped too. And when I got the bill, it was less than I'd already spent trying to blindly solve it myself.

Sounds like you have a good grasp of your situation Johnny. It also sounds like you need to find a good mechanic.

This happened to me and I had to replace to alternator to resolve the issue. The car would die while in traffic. Bad alt was the case.

Thanks bykfixer being in school there really isn't much money around except for the student loans for now (quit my job to focus on studying) so thats why I've been doing everything on my own. But like you said, sometimes it pays to have a pro involved.

Re: Car dies randomly plz help

The trick Johnny is finding a good one... that you can trust.

There's lots of decent mechanics. Quite a few good ones. But personalities that click with yours is the key.
Most will gladly take your money.

At 49 years old I've seen quite a few. Some were d@m good, but we just didn't gel if you know what I mean. My cars were fixed proper.

But the guy I call my mechanic now one day showed me how to swap an ignition switch instead of charging me. And he prefers I bring my own parts because he knows I use better than he does most of the time (oem vs part store type).

I hope you solve your dilema soon so you'll have one less stress in your life so that focusing on school will be easier.
I quit halfway through. A mistake I'd not make again if life repeated itself.

Yea I feel you, I've met a couple good mechanics locally but like most they are your friend as long as you can pay. And honestly there have been plenty of times where I wanted to quit school but when I think about the repayment period my only option now is to finish. Thanks alot for your feedback, good advice is hard to come by.

Re: Car dies randomly plz help

I've been through two ignition switches on my '97 SH. 1st one was on recall. Honda said they would have done it again. It was over a half hour away to the dealer, at that point, so I had my local guy do it.
