opinions on this headache?

I am thinking about buying this SH,
2000 Honda Prelude SH for Sale - MUST GO
I read that changing out the shift cables is a PITA, also the guy says it leaks a little bit of oil and it possibly needs a new cat. I asked about the oil leaks and if there were any codes, he hasn't gotten back. I was thinking of offering $1200? Whats your opinion?

Shoot if the oil leaks are anywhere as bad as mine were then you'll probably spend like another 1,500+ on changing seals >_<
Unless you have a really cool mechanic or you can do it yourself ^_^
Cheap parts, expensive labor.
Keep in mind that the car is about 14 years old so it'll most likely be seals

Re: opinions on this headache?

It only has second gear?

If you are mechically inclined and can take your time, it's probably not a bad car. Leaks are not that hard to fix if skinned knuckles, dislocating wrist joints and and a sore back are your idea of a good time...

But if you need it to get you around... now... keep shopping.

No other way to reach the screw I was after... it pops back in place later...

Just kidding, but in these tight engine bays sometimes you do have to manipulate your arm/elbow in unconventional ways until you discover universal joint sockets and specialty tools.

Body looks clean. You should be able to manually go under the hood and follow the gear shift cables to the transmission and work the levers by hand try to at least get it into each gear and at see if it starts to move in each gear if it stalls when you let the clutch out no biggie but at least you would know the trans isnt toast.

Re: opinions on this headache?

I would mirror everybody's comments on it to say that it would be a good buy if you don't need the car to run right immediately. Some time and money invested in it will get you where you need to be, but until then you will have a car that won't run as it should.

I just hate when I forget I'm wearing a good shirt and then shove my arms past the point of no return...

As soon as I pull them back out I find them covered in disappoint.

Re: opinions on this headache?

You can check shiftercables. They aren't that bad if it's a stock car. Have someone shift gears while you're watching the cables on top of the transmission. If it's not cables - it's syncros, which will require a transmission rebuild.

Catalytic converter is an easy fix.

oil seals....depends. It's also due for a timing belt etc. So if you can't do the work yourself, you may end up dumping an easy 1500-2k in parts/labor.
