What is meant by 'needs rebuild?

Also how's the syncros on that 'working tranny'?

Not sure about the syncro's, trannys are my least known car subject, however it was shifting pretty well given its age. No noticeable catching.

The mechanic that tested it said he found exhaust gasses in the cooling system and the head gasket was blown. He recommended getting the head machined.
Hope that helps.

EDIT: machined not refinished.
